Games We Know Nothing And Still Want To Play  Blog by BrunoBRS,  Category: Editorial

Gamers need to hype. They need to speculate, search and trust rumors, but most importantly, they need to hype. Why? Because hyping a game is almost as fun as playing a demo of the game while it's not out. How many times did you go to the forums, saw a “New rumor on *insert game*” topic and ran for it, avid to know what were the news?

This Editorial is a small compilation of the currently most hyped games we know nothing about. Now, before someone mentions it, yes, there are more games from Nintendo on the list, but if there's someone to blame for this, it's Nintendo themselves, who since the “overhyped catastrophe” that was Twilight Princess (a good game that many treated as the second coming of Christ, and were obviously disappointed), decided that they would only divulge information on their games a couple months before the release. With that explained, let's move to our first game:

Super Mario Galaxy 2

It's-a me, sequel!

What do we know: I'm not even sure if I should add SMG2 to this list, considering it's obvious that it's a direct sequel to the 2007 hit, but other than knowing it's more of Super Mario Galaxy, but with Yoshi, and harder, we know nothing.

Why everyone wants to play it: It's more of the same. But when we say it's more of the same to what is considered one of the best games of all time, everyone wants more of the same. Plus, it's more challenging and Yoshi is around. What's there not to like?

Golden Sun DS

six years... six years i have been waiting for the chance

to appear on this screenshot!

What do we know: It's the third game from the Golden Sun series, and every RPG fan that knows what a good RPG is knows that Golden Sun DS won't disappoint.

Why everyone wants to play it: Do you like RPGs? Have you ever played Golden Sun or Golden Sun: The Lost Age on the GBA? Then you too want to play this. The first two were known as not only two of the most gorgeous graphics on the GBA, but two of the greatest RPG experiences on that generation. Golden Sun DS wants to honor it's ancestors.

Metroid: Other M

Smackdown VS Raw? No, it's Metroid, the Team Ninja way!

What do we know: A trailer of a Metroid game made by Team Ninja with explosions, cel-shaded graphics, melee attacks and a bigger emphasis on Samus' story was shown at the end of Nintendo's E3 Press Conference last year.

Why everyone wants to play it: Ever since that action-packed trailer, everyone's been confused about many things: the game plays in 2D, 3D or first person? Will it keep the “Metroid atmosphere” while focusing more on the story? What does that "M" stand for? Will I be able to get my hands on it in 2010? Will Team Ninja's famous “realistic bouncing breasts engine” be applied on the game? All those questions will probably have to wait until the next E3.

The Legend of Zelda Wii

"I wanna hold your NECK and use you as a sword!"

What do we know: The image above is a concept art for the game. Eiji Aonuma is trying to overcome Ocarina of Time in terms of revolutionizing the genre. He also claims to be taking the series on a new direction, away from the “dungeon -> field -> dungeon” we're used to. Oh, and it supports Wiimotion+.

Why everyone wants to play it: It's Zelda. A big one. The first to take full advantage of the Wii's capabilities. And it supports motion+. If you try to visit the Wii forums of any site, chances are you'll meet at least 3 different topics flooding with rumors and speculation on the game. “That girl's the master sword!”, “No! It's the fairy queen from Wind Waker!” (google it), “Link has no sword because he won't fight!” “of course he'll fight, but he's a wizard now!” (believe it, both these statements were heard by me before) and many other nearly baseless rumors.

Metal Gear Solid Rising

Your favorite mutilated G.I.Joe cosplay is back

What do we know: “tactical espionage action” is now “lightning bolt action”. And Raiden's back.

Why everyone wants to play it: If you, like me and practically every PS3 owner, played Metal Gear Solid 4 and watched the scene where Raiden, alone, annihilates a bunch of gekkos (those ostrich-like robots) with his sword only, then you probably picture MGS Rising as that scene over and over. And for the bosses, you picture his fight with Vamp. How epic can this game be?

The Last Guardian

"Who's the cutest hippogriff pierced by arrows? You are! Yes you are, yes you are!"

What do we know: It's from Team ICO. And you have a pet hippogriff. And “he” is cute.

Why everyone wants to play it: If you've played Shadow of the Colossus and liked it (how can you not?), you're dying to see what they're doing with this game. The same applies to ICO, since it seems like the game's a bizarre fusion between the two past works from Team ICO. But what if you haven't played either of them and never heard of the quality work Team ICO delivers? First, I'd like to invite you to get out of the cave you live inside and meet the world. Second, You've probably seen the trailer, noticed that it looks gorgeous and that... you're dying to know how the hell you play that game, because right now it doesn't seem to make sense.

Anything that comes with Natal and Sony's glowing stick

The Final battle begins... fall 2010

What do we know: You mean the hardware or the games? There's only one game related to project Natal. It's Milo, that weird kid from the E3 conference. As for Sony's motion controls, all we've seen in terms of games is the tech demo shown on the E3 press conference. What was there? Well, there was some random room where you could play around with stuff, and an Elder Scrolls like moment. And the man explaining the control mentioned that the glowing orb on top of it can change colors depending on the situation, for example, and I quote him, “If you're playing an RPG and you choose the Fireball spell for your wizard, the orb turns red. You then swing the controller and the wizard will throw the fireball!”

Why everyone wants to play it: Be you a die hard Nintendo fan trying to prove that neither Natal nor Sony's still unnamed motion controllers won't be as awesome as your trusty wiimote, be you a die hard Sony/Microsoft fan trying to prove that the Wii is the past and the motion brought for your console is the new revolution, be you just a regular gamer anxious to play the latest technology, you want to try it out.

And this is the list. It's surprisingly small, but that's more because most big hits already have tons of info about them around the internet. Did I miss something? Did I say something wrong? Do you think I should have added another game that I forgot? Then mention it on your comment, and, if there's an opportunity, a second list will be delivered.

I know I know. And, I will very soon.

@din5193 - people see what they want to see. i know all the master sword "hints", i just highly doubt they made a sword girl. maybe she's from the tribe/dimension/whatever that forged the master sword, hence the similarities.

and i don't follow much the X360 exclusives, which would explain why i forgot to even check if halo reach could fit in the list Tongue out strange thing is that most people that remind me of a game i haven't mentioned say "heavy rain". but i know pretty much everything there is to know about the game before the release, and all that from a single interview/gameplay demo from gamespot on last year's E3.

Yeah, I remember that. I also remember these things:

1: The criss-crossing pattern on her legs is the same pattern on the hilt of the Master Sword (at least, in Twilight Princess. Which is what all these other points will be based off of).

2: Her "sleeves" (or whatever) have the same pattern and shape of the Master Sword's guard, as well as a similar angle.

3: Her hair has the same shape, color, and angle as the tip of the Master Sword.

4: The diamond on her chest is similar to the one on the Master Sword (also in the correct position if you compare her sleeves to the sword's guard).

5: Her "belt" (or whatever) looks almost exactly like the part of the Master Sword between the guard and the hilt.

6: Link has no sword in the picture (which Miyamoto frequently hinted at), and she's positioned spookily close to where his sword would be. Her right sleeve (her right, your left) is exactly positioned where the blade would be, and is shaped quite similar to a blade.

Of course, there's also the possiblility that the Master Sword is a Great Fairy/Fairy Queen... but that seems too easy. I think she's the Master Sword, and possibly they used the Fairy Queen as a design basis for her.

While we're at it, we still don't know anything about Halo: Reach yet.

The scenarios will be clearer during this year E3. We'll see how much progress they have really made so far.

@din5193 - might i ask where did you hear that? honestly, i'm much more fond of the theory that she's this girl:

remember her from wind waker?

By the way, now it's almost entirely certain that the girl in the Zelda poster is the Master Sword.

@tanya - by last one i suppose you mean the last guardian? and BTW, you should get a wii already, it's not the first time i see you whining because there are many great games on it you'd like to play Tongue out

BrunoBRS

on Jan 25, 2010

@fetuszero - i think after shadow of the colossus, everything that comes from them SHOULD be hyped. SotC is simply one of my favorite games ever. and i've seen quite a lot of hype around it.

and i don't blame you for golden sun... but only because you're not a fan of RPGs Tongue out *points at own avatar* 'cause i am hyped, and anyone who touched the first two games is too Tongue out

Great blog. I agree with you about most of the games except the last one. Specially with Zelda. I don't have a Wii but I still want to play it. Only because everyone talk very highly about it. And, I too want to try out the new tech. Can't really wait to experience them. Specially Milo. I remember watching a crazy trailer of this game and since then I'm kinda waiting for its arrival.

Metal Gear Solid Rising and The Last Guardian are the two titles that are in my "want to play" list. The Last Guardian.. I still wonder what the hell that is, but as soon as I heard that it was by Team ICO I wanted it. Shadow of the Colossus had to be one of the best games in the PS2 library. Though it is strange because I don't think Team ICO's work has ever been hyped.. it has been, but only after they released their games (unless I simply wasn't around when they were hyped before release).

As for Metroid.. If they ever release another side-scrolling/platformer Metroid like those on the SNES, add it to my list lol. I didn't like the first person titles :/

You definitely nailed some good titles in that list, though I have never heard of Golden Sun, but then again I'm not a big fan of RPGs. A game without hype is what we could consider dead on arrival. If it isn't hyped. people won't notice it. Great blog you got there!

@canana -

@din5193 - HOW CAN YOU NOT BE INTERESTED IN METAL GEAR O_o and the last guardian, well, i suppose you never heard of team ICO or their works too, then Tongue out i'm not really caring about sony's dildo, but if i only mentioned natal, someone might've killed me Tongue out natal looks way more promising than the eyetoy, honestly. but i'm keeping my hopes down... yet i still can't deny that i want to play it just to see if it works Tongue out

Well, the Metal Gear series never really interested me, and I've never heard of The Last Guardian. Also, I've seen something like Natal before. I think it was called... the Eyetoy? Yeah, I remember how that ended up. And Sony's... thing just looks like a Wiimote with less buttons. Not very interesting.

Nice one. This article might be mentioned in the next community report. Wink

@sleven - if they really had something left to be worked on, they wouldn't have set the dates so soon. remember that the sony one only moved the release date to fall because sony wanted to avoid competition with MS.

Do you really believe they will show up this early? There always delay when something big comes out. It's only been 2 years that they are working with their new devices! Then again, I agree with you. I'm really anxious to try them out. There has been enough talking about them already.

@din5193 - hmm... curiously those are all the nintendo ones Tongue out

@koshai - lol thanks and i'd get my wii fixed soon, the wave of great titles this year is awesome Tongue out

@sleven - i put fall 2010 because that's when the big 3 will have their motion controllers on the market. natal is coming on spring and the sony thingy on fall.

Great blog. I agree with you with every 'Why everyone wants to play it'. But I don't think 2010 will be the year for motion sensor battle. Not so soon. Maybe around 2014-26. And, the reason I want to play is because of the titles.

awesome writing!!! should be featured. my fingers are crossed on Natal thing. If it turns out too be that good, I just hope the price is reasonable for us to buy. Nd I am seriously looking forward with the Legend of Zelda. Before that I need to repair my Wii.

As far as the first four go, I only know one thing; they'll be completely awesome. And that's all I need to know right now.
