Touhou 12.5 announced  Blog by FetusZero,  Category: Games

While I don't think many of you have heard of these games, or even if any of you are interested in the danmaku genre, I am pleased to say that the next installment in Touhou's spin-offs has been anounced last week and is due for release on March 14th. Touhou 12.5 Double Spoiler is what we could consider a follow-up to 9.5 Shoot the Bullet. The video I captured of 9.5 finally serves a purpose, as I will post it here to give an idea of what will this spin-off be, followed by a small development of the game. I will not speak of the main series nor the fighters simply because it would make this a whole lot longer, but I'll be sure to do so whenever they release the next installment ;p.

Here is athe video of stage 2-5 in Touhou 9.5: Shoot the Bullet (the video is supposed to play in HD automatically):

As you can see, the goal here is to take pictures of the other character, or the stage's boss. The more bullets there is in the picture, the more points you gather. Also, there is a red ring that flashes around the boss, in this case, Cirno. If a picture is taken at the right moment, it gives more points as well. Be aware that if you hold the shutter button to take a picture, you can move the frame around.

There are many factors that comes into play regarding the score, such as being close to the bullets, being close to the boss, being inside the photo, the size of the frame (the longer you wait with the shutter button pressed, the smaller the frame gets), the number of colors within the bullet pattern and their sizes, etc. You can see the added bonuses in the top right or left corners  of the stage screen after taking a picture (the position depends on which side of the screen the picture was taken). The primary goal in the game is to simply take the required number of pictures of the character opposing you. There's no real story within the game itself, as it is once pointed out in the game;"No one knows the purpose of the photos, except Aya (the character you control)".

Now comes the strategic part of the gameplay. As you noticed from the video, taking pictures also eliminates the bullets that were within the frame. Once your shutter eye is at 100% ready, if you cannot reach the boss or you find the screen to be filled with enough bullets to make you feel dizzy (believe me, there's literally nothing in terms of bullets in the video I posted), you can take the photo anywhere you want to erase some of the bullets and try to create an opening. I personally am not too good with this tactic, as the hole you leave open gets filled back up within seconds. Actually, I'm not too good at the game itself, which I'd consider being the hardest of the Touhou series.

So from what we understand so far, you need to wait for the shutter eye to be 100% ready before taking a picture, with which you try to capture the boss within the frame of the photo, and achieving the required number of photos of a character ends the level. On top of the strategy and beautifully create patterns, as in other TH games, you can focus your attack. In the main games, focusing makes you move a tiny bit slower, but gives your attack more power and overall, makes it easier to overcome some of the bullet patterns. In Shoot the Bullet, focusing makes you ridiculously slow, but greatly increases the charge time of the shutter's percentage. I hardly ever use the focus in this game as, while it charges quickly, the ridiculous speed at which you are reduced makes the game near impossible.

I have never finished Shoot the Bullet, nor do I have any plans on ever finishing it, it is just ridiculously hard and I envy those who can beat it entirely. The video I took is an easy scene, but I liked the way I would spin around and dodge the bullets, so I decided to capture it a long time ago. Despite being bad at the games and not being able to go through most of them, Touhou remains my favorite Danmaku games.

For more information on Double Spoiler, you can check out ZUN's blog if you can read japanese, but if you can't (like me), the translation can be found on Gensyoko.org as well. On both sites there are screenshots of the 12.5th installment.
For more information regarding Touhou as whole, be sure to visit the Touhou Wiki.
You can always go check my YouTube profile as I have a couple more videos like this one coming from different games in the series.

@DeltaX :
My favorite would have to be Remilia. Guess I like the "princess" attitude lol.

@BrunoBRS :
I checked out some videos, reminds me of Thexder NEO (I think that's what it was called) which released not too long ago on PSN. Not directly my type of shooter, but it's worth a try, we never know.

@Tanya :
I have some new videos of a Level 3 fight, though I just didn't upload them lol.

Sounds interesting but I think I'll pass this one. And, I think you were right, the video will make my eyes to blur at times.

@Sleven :
I didn't answer your second question lol, but I didn't want to edit since it would send a second notification to Bruno as well.

I first found Touhou because of Mushihimesama, which is often reputed for having the hardest final boss ever in the video game industry. While watching such videos, I eventually fell on a video of Touhou and was amazed at the beautiful, colorful and brutal bullet patterns shown when fighting the bosses. Right at that moment, I tried the games and now I own all of them to the exception of the first 5 which don't exist anymore. I also miss 10.5 and 12.3 which are fighting games (I have 7.5 for these, but I'm not a big fan of the fighting genre so I never play it) and 12. I still wonder why it took me so long to get the Undefined Fantastic Object (12) as it is part of the main series and is quite awesome and brutal, but I'll buy it at the same time as Double Spoiler (12.5) when it comes out.

As for other unknown games, such as Penumbra (which is why I know of Amnesia since it's from Frictional as well), well.. it pays off to take a look at Steam deals, that's the only reason I know of Penumbra lol.

@BrunoBRS :
Never heard of Bangai-O, but judging from your comment I'll check it out. It just gave me the feeling that I had to check it out lol.

@Sleven :
There are trials of some of the games available on the Official Website. Just click here to go to the Games section of the Team Shangai Alice website, though it is not translated and is in Japanese. You can always translate it with Google.
Note that Touhou 1 to 5 aren't available anymore and the only way to play them is through emulators, but 6 to 12 (including 7.5, 9.5, 12.3 and 12.5) are all available, though only the main series have trials to the exception of 7.5 (Immaterial and Missing Power), the ones in this blog do not have any trials available.

@BrunoBRS :
Then perhaps you would be interested in the main games of the series as they're your typical bullet hell games in which you can shoot, use bombs and go for a high score once you've mastered the game. After all, Shoot the Bullet and Double Spoiler are spin-offs ;p

Here's a link to one of the bosses in Touhou 6: The Embodiment of Scarlet Devil on the Hard difficulty played by none other than myself! (I'm aware of the ridiculous death I got during the fight -_-): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=STHBo56hXCw&fmt=22

so wait... this is like a variation of the bullet rain/shower games, but instead of shooting, you take pictures? weird... i'll stay with my "ridiculous to avoid but at least you can fight back" Tongue out

@Koshai :
No problem, the games are for PC and should be relatively easy to check out. They're hard to find for sale though, but I buy them off of PaletWeb.

@farzana :
You could since it's for PC and it doesn't require all that much in terms of specs. The hardest part is actually installing them since they are Japanese and you need the Japanese locale on Windows to be able to install them. The problem is, with recent Windows (since Vista I think), to get a different locale you need the version specific to that region, so I install them in Linux (much easier) and then move the folders to my Windows hard drive.

@Tanya :
Yep, I'm the one playing it lol. Every Touhou videos on my account is played by myself actually. I sometimes create holes, but in that level it's unnecessary since you can simply turn around in circles while staying relatively close to Cirno as the bullets are aimed towards your position. Touhou is entirely based off of learning the pattern of your enemies.

@Xiao :
Because the Touhou girls are so cute! I think there's only one guy in the entire TH series and it was in like what.. the second or first game? But yeah I had to write nicely, it is one of my favorite series in the genre (happy text smiley, I'm avoiding them until we know whether or not my non-graphical text smileys affect notifications).

If that's level2 then how hard will other level be Surprised Did you play that video part? Though you mentioned at the strategy part that you aren't good at taking photos and creating holes.
