Back in March we introduced you to Cosmochoria, an indie title from Nate Schmold of 30/30. Described as "a love letter to old-school action / arcade games like Asteroids, Mario Bros. and Donkey Kong," Cosmochoria has players taking control of the cutest, little, naked cosmonaut who's out to save the universe.
Harnessed with a jetpack and armed with a laser, the cosmonaut flies between planets, shooting down aliens and planting seeds, all in the hopes of restoring life to the chaotic galaxy. From these seeds grow colorful trees that sprout fruit. Pick the fruit, earning more seeds to rejuvenate your surroundings even more.
However speedy you are progressing through the game, the aliens will appear in waves, interrupting your heroism and attempting to bring your mission to an end. Moreover, with each alien outbreak, the strange creatures become "smarter, more varied, and are even interspersed with epic boss battles with giant creatures like robots, space dragons, motherships and more."
With handcrafted illustrations and a unique electronic soundtrack to match, Cosmochoria is a different approach to the traditional platformer, and "while no story is immediately apparent, consecutive games will begin to reveal some of the deeper mysteries surrounding the universe around you."
On Monday, the Canadian developer tweeted that the action platformer would be coming to Steam Early Access on September 29. In an early morning Twitch stream, Schmold confirmed my initial thoughts, delightfully beatboxing that the Early Access version would indeed be available for Windows, Mac and Linux. The full game will release on the mentioned platforms sometime this fall, and thanks to the $28,000+ CAD pledged on Kickstarter, Cosmochoria will also release on Wii U.
Thanks to a recommendation from a trusted colleague, I checked out Cosmochoria on a very frigid, snowy day, and couldn't get enough of it. I've been following the title ever since and couldn't pass up the opportunity to support its development the instant it hit Kickstarter. You can preorder the game and try a demo here.
