Opening a conference with a short clip of two Rabbids messing around is not entirely unexpected when you’re Ubisoft. Having Shigeru Miyamoto come on stage to announce Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, on the other hand, is. And that’s precisely how Ubisoft’s press conference began. Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle is a turn-based tactical adventure game, exclusive to the Nintendo Switch. Having been in development for more than three years now, the title sees Rabbids teleported in the Mushroom Kingdom, making the world unstable and chaotic. A Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle Trailer was shown, featuring exploration sequences and combat. Flags define battlefield zones. Battles are turn-based, characters having abilities of their own and being able to move further with the help of a Team Jump mechanic, done when near a buddy. It’s basically Mario X-Com, except instead of gruesome and unfair deaths we get Rabbids. The game has a release date of August 29, 2017.
As this year marks the 10th anniversary of Assassin’s Creed, Origins, the newest title, was also present. We’ve learned that the title has been in the works for over three and a half years. The Crew 2 received a trailer which initially featured cars, motorcycles and monster trucks. The final shot also included airplanes and boats. It was later confirmed that the game will feature street racing, off-road sections, boat and plane rides. The Crew 2 will be out sometime in Early 2018 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole got a trailer and is coming our way on October 17th. A fairly cryptic trailer for VR title Transference, coming Spring 2018, was also present. Skull & Bones, developed by Ubi Singapore, is a game about pirates fighting pirates while on their pirate ships. A gameplay trailer was shown, featuring the Loot Hunt 5v5 team based PvP mode. Two teams battle each other over loot, while the one that escapes with the most shinies wins. From what we were told, wind will play a role in ship positioning. Different warships will have different strengths. A vulnerable broadside permitted one side to board an enemy ship, which in turn repairs their own. Pirate Hunters come in at the end of the hunt, targeting the pirates with most loot. This is when players attempt to escape with their loot. The title is set to release sometime in Fall 2018 on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
Next came the mandatory Ubisoft song and dance segment. This year’s bit featured a dubstep bear. Oh, and Just Dance 2018 is coming out in October. South Park Phone Destroyer is a mobile card game coming to Iphone and Android later in 2017. It has clerics, choir boys and Cock Magic, as expected. Starlink: Battle For Atlas, developed by Ubisoft Toronto , is an upcoming space combat title, heading for a Fall 2018 release on Xbox One, PS4 and Nintendo Switch. Players will take a team of pilots through a “massive open living star system”. Starship customization will, of course, be part of the game. Both physical starship collectibles and digital versions will also be available. Steep: Road To The Olympics, the first expansion for Ubisoft’s action sports title, is coming December 5th.
We also got a closer look at FarCry 5. Hope County is cut out from the rest of the world by the cult controlling it. The game will feature a dog companion which brings you weapons from fallen enemies. I think that qualifies him for a good boy award. The trailer featured tagging enemies via binoculars and water tower sniping. It also featured a couple of the available companions which you can, apparently, order around. Alternatively, the title will be playable in co-op. FarCry 5 will be out on the 27th of February, 2018.
The conference was closed with an announcement that was a long time coming and, also, not supposed to be there. It was previously stated that Beyond Good And Evil 2 would not be part of Ubisoft’s lineup, however we received a cinematic trailer for the title. A varied sci-fi world, humor and, perhaps, the game’s main quest were showcased in a presentation that, if you’re asking me, hit all the right marks. Michel Ancel, the game’s creative director was on the verge of crying as he took the stage. The story takes place before the birth of Jade, in a different solar system. Corporations create hybrids in labs, enslaving them to colonize stars. Players will join a crew of characters who fight for freedom. Those interested can offer feedback during development through the Space Monkey Program.
Ubisoft’s was a good conference, by all means. Whether it’s the initial announcement, that may just make me get a Nintendo Switch if I win the lottery soon, the upcoming South Park title or Beyond Good And Evil 2, it had a good set of announcements.
