David Jaffe Talks About The Future Of Twisted Metal
What does the future hold for Twisted Metal?
News by Grayshadow on Jan 21, 2018
David Jaffe, acclaimed video game designer best known for the God of War and Twisted Metal franchises took to YouTube to discuss the future of the Twisted Metal series.
First off Jaffe explained that he doesn't own the IP, Twisted Metal is owned by Sony and not him. He hasn't heard anything about the future of the franchise and Sony doesn't need to tell him since they own it and not him.
Jaffe doesn't know if Sony is making a new game, and would be surprised if they were, but believes that there's still an audience. The real challenge is how to create a game that is relevant to modern audiences, especially considering how expensive creating games have become and historically the game has only done well in America according to Jaffe.
Jaffe did touch on remastering past games but quickly stated that only the PS3 version, released in 2012, would make sense. Taking into account the global market and how expensive a remastered game would be for a series that was successful in one region, it would be a risky venture.
Jaffe believes that the only way Twisted Metal would work with modern audiences if they had a 5-6 million dollars budget and the game was primarily online with service updates selling for $20. The biggest issue, according to Jaffe, is pleasing Twisted Metal fans.
The fracture within the community has caused random opinions about "what people like". Citing the criticisms of 2012 version of people being pleased with the new direction and others angry that not enough characters were playable.
Personally, I loved the Twisted Metal franchise. For longtime PlayStation fans, the Twisted Metal franchise is one of the most beloved and iconic series for older gamers.
