A recent NPD Group’s Gamer Segmentation 2009 Report has hinted that there are now more female gamers around than ever before. The market has shown a five percent increase from last year, and apparently now make up 28% of all console gamers. They’ve also made an impact on the handheld sector, increasing their foothold by four percent.
It’s a fair assumption that the numbers are coming from increased sales of the Nintendo Wii and DS, and as a result of this more and more games are now being directed towards girls. Anita Frazier, market tracking analyst agrees and describes last year as, "one of the most transformative in history in terms of defining the audience for gaming."
With games such as Hannah Montana: Spotlight World Tour, Babysitting Party and the abundance of Imagine games out there now; the figures are set to rise and rise. So is this a new era in gaming, or simply the fairer sex catching up? We’ll let you be the judge.
