Higher end CPUs deliver noticeable gains only in CPU intensive titles while budget chips maintain stable performance across modern games.

There is a difference between high-end benchmark testing and real-world use in the present CPU market. Only a limited number of people use the fastest GPUs in testing environments.

Most systems have more balanced setups; high-end CPUs are typically paired with GPUs. The difference between entry-level and flagship processors shows how performance changes in common gaming situations.

Comparing Entry-Level and High-End AM5 CPUs

We used a more realistic GPU arrangement to examine the difference between the slowest and fastest AM5 processors. We utilized an RTX 5070 instead of the best GPU to show how most builds are put together. Ryzen 7 9850X3D is the best processor in the series, while the Ryzen 5 8400F is the worst and is easy to find at a considerably lower price.

We discovered that most gamers don't need much more than GPUs like the RTX 5070 Ti or RX 9070 XT for 1440p gaming. Many of these cards can also handle 4K, but the best CPU choice depends on the game.

Observations about how the Game Works

Wukong's Performance

We saw that both CPUs did well in Wukong at 1440p, very high settings with DLSS set to 75%. In real life, you wouldn't be able to tell the two apart. Ryzen 5 8400F used less than 60% of its power without stuttering, and the Ryzen 7 9850X3D used less than 25%. The experience stayed fluid, which means that investing extra in a CPU in this case doesn't make a big difference.

How well Stalker 2 works

We ran Stalker 2 at 1440p on medium with DLSS set to quality. Ryzen 5 8400F was used about 60% to 70% of the time and worked well. Ryzen 7 9850X3D, on the other hand, almost doubled the fps at the same workload. The higher-end CPU used up all of the GPU's power, but the 8400F did not. In this situation, a more powerful CPU clearly improved performance.

How well does Call of Duty Warzone work

We played Warzone at the highest settings at 1440p. The findings from both CPUs were almost the same. Ryzen 5 8400F used more than 90% of its power, yet its performance was still comparable to that of the higher-end CPU. The margin didn't get much bigger even at 1080p, which shows that budget CPUs can still do well in this kind of game.

How well Counter Strike 2 works

We used CS2 to test how well it performed in CPU-intensive situations. In benchmark tests, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D achieved about 720 fps at 1440p medium and about 900 fps at 1080p medium. Ryzen 5 8400F gave lower statistics, but it was still playable. There was a big change, but most people wouldn't need such high fps.

People who Make things and how the System Works

In another test, we saw strange behavior when the Ryzen 5 8400F reached 100% usage in the menu. This was probably because of shader preloading. During games, use plummeted to about 90%, while the Ryzen 7 9850X3D hovered around 60%. Both CPUs maintained consistent performance at 1440p epic, and lowering the resolution to 1080p increased the fps by about the same amount.

How well Marvel Rivals works

We tried out Marvel Rivals and discovered that the Ryzen 5 8400F worked well, but it didn't have much potential for improvement. If you want higher fps at 1080p, you might want to get a better CPU. In this case, the Ryzen 7 9850X3D performed better.

How well Fortnite runs

We tried Fortnite as a game that uses a lot of CPU. Ryzen 7 9850X3D performed far better in CPU-intensive tasks. Ryzen 5 8400F played nicely and felt fluid, but it was definitely behind in terms of raw performance. The disparity is due to the price differential of $350 to $400.

Final Thoughts

We observed that, in most cases, paying more leads to better performance. However, the Ryzen 5 8400F is still a good deal for the money. It has 16 MB of L3 cache and can run recent games without many problems. It gives new users of the AM5 platform a good place to start.

To minimize bottlenecks, you should use powerful GPUs like the RTX 5070 Ti or RTX 5080 with the Ryzen 9 9850X3D. Using it with lower-end GPUs or lower resolutions takes away some of its benefits.

We concluded that every CPU in the AM5 series can perform well, depending on its design. It depends on how much money you have, what kind of GPU you have, and what games you want to play.
