FSR 4 on Older AMD GPUs Looks Real and It Could Impact the GPU Market
AMD shifts development focus toward AI driver features instead of expanding FSR4 support.

Recent leaks and ongoing industry discussions suggest that AMD may be holding back one of its best graphics improvements for consumers in years. FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) was first shown off as an exclusive feature of the Radeon 9000-series GPUs.
Still, it now seems far more flexible. If what we've learned recently is true, FSR 4 might make older Radeon hardware look and work a lot better. This raises issues about AMD's long-term plans.

How FSR 4 Got to Older GPUs
When AMD showed off FSR 4, they said the technique required FP8 computing capabilities, which were added with the RDNA 4 architecture powering the Radeon 9000 series. That reasoning seemed to make sense at first. FP8 enables faster AI processing, allowing FSR 4's machine learning models to upscale images with greater clarity and stability than before.
But later leaked source code showed that AMD had also developed a different version of FSR 4 based on INT8. INT8 computation works on RDNA 3 and RDNA 2 GPUs, making it far more compatible with other hardware. In other words, the hardware limit may not be as stringent as first thought.
The INT8 version doesn't quite match the FP8 version's performance, but it still works very well. Benchmarks show that the frame rate is much better than native rendering, and the image quality is far superior to FSR3.1. In real-world gameplay, sharper detail reconstruction, less shimmering, and more steady temporal accumulation all make a perceptible difference. Many users can tell right away that there is a difference.
AMD's Comments Leave the Door Slightly Open
People at CES asked AMD's chief software officer and head of graphics software directly if an FSR 4 beta might be available for RDNA 3 GPUs. No official intentions were stated, but the reaction did not rule out the possibility. The tone, on the other hand, suggested that such a release would need to be carefully planned, perhaps as an experimental or prototype feature rather than a full rollout.
This answer prompted others to believe that AMD was at least considering the concept internally. Since the INT8 version looked to work, a restricted beta release seemed possible from a technical point of view.
The sudden change in direction
Hardware Unboxed has talked to AMD again about possible INT8 FSR 4 support more recently. This time, the response was pretty much no. AMD said it was allocating development resources to AI-focused features in its gaming GPU drivers rather than making FSR 4 work with more games.
Many fans are confused by this choice. The leaked implementation shows that FSR 4 can work well on earlier architectures, even though there are minor differences in the images across game engines. The upgrade is big enough that many people would probably be okay with beta-level bugs in exchange for better graphics and performance.

A Missed Chance to Build Goodwill
In a world where GPU prices are still high and new features are increasingly tied to the latest hardware generations, allowing FSR 4 on RDNA 2 and RDNA 3 could have been a big show of goodwill. It would immediately increase the value of existing Radeon cards, prolonging their lifespan and making them more competitive.
NVIDIA has been putting several cutting-edge technologies in the hands of only one generation of users. This gave AMD a chance to stand out by focusing on broader support. A beta release of INT8-based FSR 4 would not only benefit current customers but also help AMD's reputation as a firm ready to deliver important improvements to older products.
For now, it looks like that chance is still there. It's not certain whether AMD will revisit the idea. Still, this situation shows how important software strategy is in determining GPU value, much as basic hardware performance does.
