NVIDIA RTX 3060 is still a popular mid-range GPU in 2025

According to Steam's hardware poll, the RTX 3060 is still one of the most popular graphics cards. It remains popular because its specs are still useful for modern gaming. The RTX 3060 comes in two primary versions: the original 12GB model and a smaller 8GB model.
The 12GB version performs better with newer games, especially those that utilize high-resolution texture packs, which require more video memory.

How well it works with new games
The 12GB RTX 3060 can run Battlefield 6 at 1080p with medium settings and high-resolution textures turned on. DLAA helps maintain a frame rate around 90 fps while keeping the image crisp.
With DLAA turned on, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle also runs nicely on high settings, using more than 9GB of VRAM. Some 8GB GPUs crash or become unstable in similar situations, underscoring the importance of having extra VRAM.
We usually avoid HD texture packs to conserve space and speed up our computers. However, some games still perform better with more memory. For example, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 runs smoothly at a high level with few frame-time issues, thanks to the 12GB of storage.
The RTX 3060 can't always maintain more than 60 frames per second at high settings in new games. However, it still works well for the price, especially on the resale market, where it typically sells for less than $200.
VRAM and Compatibility with the Future
With 12GB of GDDR6 memory, there is enough room for modern games and environments with many textures. As more games incorporate ray tracing as a standard feature, having a GPU that can handle it remains a good idea.
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle and Doom: The Dark Ages are two forthcoming games that require hardware-level ray tracing to work. Even though future games may surpass the 3060, it is still useful right now, especially when paired with DLSS to enhance performance.
Performance of DLSS and upscaling
DLSS makes the RTX 3060 easier to use in games that are hard to run or not well optimized. DLSS 4 integration improves image quality, even when you're utilising balanced or performance settings.
Using the medium preset with DLSS Quality, Doom: The Dark Ages achieves a frame rate of around 80 frames per second at 1080p. Outer Worlds 2, on the other hand, gets an average of 75 fps on similar settings. Both titles benefit from enhanced texture quality thanks to the 12GB memory buffer.
We used an Intel i9-4900K with 125W of power and 32GB of 3200MHz DDR4 to test the GPU. This ensured the GPU's full capacity was used without causing any problems for the system.

Unreal Engine 5 Games and Frame Rate Consistency
In Oblivion, the RTX 3060 averages 72 fps on the medium preset with strong reflections and DLSS Quality. It was remastered and developed on Unreal Engine 5. There are times when the frame dips, but they are still manageable.
Borderlands 4 is notorious for being challenging; however, with the balanced DLSS mode and medium settings, it consistently maintains a frame rate above 60 fps.
This demonstrates the GPU's flexibility. Even with unavoidable dips, keeping the visuals at a modest level makes the experience smoother than turning all the settings down to the minimum.
Ray Tracing Features
Most games still don't require ray tracing. The RTX 3060 performs well at the very high RT preset with RTGI turned on in GTA V Enhanced, averaging 86 fps with steady frame pacing.
However, to maintain 60fps at the RT Ultra level in Cyberpunk 2077, you require DLSS. When you enable DLSS Performance, the image quality remains good, and the 12GB of VRAM helps prevent slowdowns during extended sessions.
We often choose to leave ray tracing off for most games to maintain higher frame rates, even though it is an available option. Ray tracing, lumen, and nanite effects can look nice, but they often slow down performance without improving the game.
However, in Fortnite, even with Lumen and Nanite enabled at the highest preset, frame rates remain above 60 frames per second. The lighting inside seems better, but the lighting outside doesn't change much.

Final Thoughts
In everyday use, the RTX 3060 is a suitable choice for gaming due to its support for DLSS and hardware ray tracing, as well as sufficient VRAM for contemporary workloads. Its continued participation in Steam's hardware survey shows that it strikes a good mix between performance and ease of use.
However, prices change, so consumers should consider other options, such as Intel's Arc B580 or AMD's Radeon 6700 XT, both of which offer 12GB of VRAM and, in some cases, better raw performance.
The RTX 3060 remains a strong choice for gaming in 2025, however. It might not be the greatest in every case. Still, it offers a good balance of features, works well, and can integrate with future technology. This makes it a suitable mid-range GPU for consumers seeking value and long-lasting performance.
