Sapphire Nitro Plus B850A Wi-Fi 7 Review: High-Performance AM5 Motherboard with Modern Connectivity
The motherboard features a premium Wi-Fi 7 antenna and multiple full-size expansion slots with modern PCIe support.

As a high-end AM5 motherboard, the Sapphire Nitro Plus B850A Wi-Fi 7 is made for gamers who want a mix of speed, expansion, and modern connectivity.
It has many high-end features, but the layout is easy to use, and the design choices are well thought out.

Overview and Layout
There are three full-size expansion spots on the Nitro Plus B850A Wi-Fi 7. The way the PCIe slots are set up is a little strange. The slot at the top is Gen5, the other two are x16 physically but electrically PCIe 4.0x4, and the slot at the bottom is PCIe 4.0x2.
There are full-size DisplayPort and HDMI outputs on the back, as well as a BIOS update port that lets you flash your CPU code with the press of a button. Another type of rear IO port is USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C. There are also four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.2 Gen 2 ports, a 2.5G RJ45 LAN port, Wi-Fi 7, and six analog audio jacks that support full 7.1-channel output.
The board has an RS232 serial port header, audio on the front panel, programmable RGB, several four-pin fan headers, a speaker, a TPM header, a front panel header, and the standard 50/50 analog RGB header.
There are four SATA 6GB/s ports, a USB Type-C 20-pin port for 5GB connections, and three M.2 slots under the GPU for storage. The M.2 layout might not be ideal for cooling. Still, the motherboard features large heatsinks that direct airflow and keep temperatures steady even under heavy stress.
The motherboard accessory package includes only two SATA cables, the Wi-Fi antenna, and a manual. A Realtek 8125BG NIC is built in and provides a 2.5G LAN connection. The box says DDR5 supports up to 16,000 MT/s, but the specs list 8,000 MT/s. This is probably a mistake because the lower numbers are confirmed elsewhere on the board.
Bench Setup and Memory Testing
Keep your CPU socket protector at all times, especially if you plan to send the motherboard in for guaranteed work. Even small amounts of dust or dirt can damage the pins and cause huge problems.
The Nitro Plus B850A can officially handle up to 192GB of memory, but we tried it with a 256GB Crucial 5600 kit. Another kit we tested was the Trident Z5 Neo RGB AMD EXPO kit. This kit can run DDR5 6000 with all four DIMMs on some motherboards, based on the CPU silicon lottery.
Postcode readout LEDs on the front edge help identify issues during boot when high-density memory is used. Sapphire has installed four Phillips screws that let you reach the M.2 holder without a tool, along with the thickest thermal pads we've ever seen.
Even though very thick thermal pads don't work as well as thinner ones that make good contact, they're better than having none at all and can help cool high-performance NVMe drives even further.
BIOS Tour
The BIOS screen on Sapphire is easy to use and well-organized. With the quick-set buttons, you can instantly turn on PBO, XMPP, or Resize BAR, which is already enabled. Because it can cause problems, XMPP is turned off by default.
In the advanced area, you can find settings for MMU, Precision Boost Overdrive, Smart Access Memory, SVM mode, and different PCIe bifurcation types, such as X8/X4/X4. You can also change the fastest link speeds for Gen5 PCIe slots and enable or disable the LAN driver.
Configuring storage is mostly about SATA, and there are choices for managing power loss and USB power. The BIOS also lets you train the memory more deeply and adjust the voltage manually, which comes in handy when you're trying to run high-density memory kits faster than the officially approved DDR5 3600.
This is one of the most complete status screens. It shows sensors, fan speeds, voltage inputs, CPU readings, and BIOS update choices. Even though the AMD CBS and PBS options aren't fully visible, the BIOS still lets you change enough settings for most overclocking and memory-tuning needs.

Performance and Compatibility
As of now, Epic memory units are not on the QVL list, but they do work on this platform. The ECC UDIMs didn't work properly. It works well with Linux, but the audio output labeling may need adjustment depending on how your system is set up. The audio codec works well, but the analog layout is strange, so the outputs might need to be renamed.
The VRM's cooling system is strong, but some parts are more for looks than for function. The temperatures of a Ryzen 9 9950X remained reasonable even when overclocked. Because of how the chipset is designed, high-density memory kits like 128GB or 256GB can only run at DDR5 3600 speeds.
The Nitro Plus B850A is marketed as a great deal because it lacks many of the flagship X870E boards' features. It would be nice to have two PCIe Gen5 M.2 slots or more USB5 and 10GB choices, but the way things are now, performance, features, and price are all good.
Final Thoughts
With the Nitro Plus B850A Wi-Fi 7, Sapphire makes a strong move into the AM5 motherboard market. The board stays cool, the BIOS works well, and Linux runs well on it.
Memory can be overclocked, but only as much as the chipset will allow. Overall, the Nitro Plus B850A is a well-rounded, enthusiast-grade motherboard that has high-end features without being too fancy. Long-term bench tests show it is stable and cools well, making it a good choice for high-performance AMD systems.
