The gaming industry is constantly changing, with new hardware, shifting player expectations, and new ways to play. Hybrid devices, handheld systems, digital ecosystems, and affordability are increasingly becoming a large part of gaming discussions. New hardware has the potential to shape how gamers experience, buy, and play games – a game that's never been seen in real life but was only imagined by the developer.

Now it's down to when, and we don't know how much, but the one thing we know is that the Steam Machine is coming. Steam Machine will be released at some point, and we believe it will change the gaming industry in a way that Microsoft and Sony will have to come to terms with. This is important to anyone who loves Valve, the Steam Deck, or gaming overall, as the future of gaming may take a different direction with the arrival of this hardware.

Steam Deck is Truly a Game-changer

As we discuss the future of gaming after the Steam Machine is released, we feel it will change forever. This is no hyperbole or chit-chat, since if you’ve looked at the Steam Deck, gaming’s already shifted after it came out.

We take full responsibility for this, beginning with Nintendo. Nintendo was the first rock to set the ripple, and then the Steam Deck came out and carried it on. Nintendo Switch proved that a hybrid console that can be used on the go is viable. Then Valve released the Steam Deck, giving people the option to play PC games on a handheld device and connect it to a TV.

From then on, so many companies attempted to enter the handheld PC market that it became almost a household conversation. ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go are also factors to consider. Sony began talking about portability and hybrid devices, and Microsoft entered into a partnership with ASUS for handheld gaming devices. Even discussions of future Xbox hardware started to veer towards a hybrid approach.

Why is it that Power is not the Central Concern

Everyone's talking about power. I get asked how this will be a game-changer when it doesn't have the power of a gaming PC or a PlayStation console. The word "power" is what people get wrapped up in: power, power, power. It's not always about some power.

When the Nintendo Switch was released, it wasn't that strong, but it sold and lasted for years. It was the experience and convenience of the games that mattered. Steam Deck demonstrated that people could enjoy games such as Cyberpunk 2077 and Elden Ring on a handheld device. It looked good, it could plug into a TV, and software optimization made it more effective.

When it comes to performance concerns, we get it. When you go take a look at the Steam Machine and say, "I don't like it," it's probably not for you. All games are not created equal.

The Steam Machine is Built For

Steam Machine discussion is not just about the specs or the machine's insides. Yes, it must be competent, but you need to know what type of audience Valve is aiming for. Valve doesn't call this a giant piece of hardware that will blow everybody else out of the water. Rather, it appears the thinking targets the Steam audience.

It's said that Valve analyzed the data and realized that about 75% of its users were already using hardware at the RTX 30-series level. When that is the desired audience, the objective becomes making that type of game better for them, rather than getting the high-dollar systems.

If you're already a Steam Deck user, you likely know plenty of people who have docked the Deck and are playing on larger screens. Supply chain rumors suggest the Steam Machine could be anywhere between 6 and 60 times more powerful than the Steam Deck. If you're already an avid Steam player and looking for more living room hardware, that's important.

A Gaming Market Breakthrough

Steam Deck has accomplished something we believe makes it a market disruptor in the Steam Machine space. Steam Deck shook things up, and in its wake is a wave of handhelds. Now, hybrid gaming ideas are becoming more common. Hybrid ideas are still being discussed in the Xbox world, and Sony may have to rethink some of its plans to remain competitive.

Gaming is expensive. Hardware is expensive. Playing video games is costly. Subscription fees are still increasing, and it is the clients who want the services who are paying more. Affordability is important to many players.

There's another way in which Valve is different. In multiplayer games on Steam, you are not charged access fees online like you are in other games. For some players, it can be frustrating to pay for internet connectivity and another fee to play online.

The Cost and Convenience of a Product are Important

Steam Machine isn't for everyone, and no one is suggesting that you give up your PlayStation or Xbox for one. For those with a family, however, when bills start going up, and for those who wonder if it's worth spending $70 or $80 on games and hundreds more on hardware, you might begin to wonder if another ecosystem would be better.

Games are more accessible thanks to Steam sales. We can buy games for a couple of dollars each and still have fun without feeling like we have to spend a lot on each purchase. This alters the way some gamers think about gaming libraries.

If you already have a PC or a Steam Deck, the Steam Machine might make sense as a system for the living room, as well. Some games don't play as well in docked mode on the Steam Deck. Access to the same game library on a more powerful device connected to a TV would enhance the experience.

We feel that at some point in every generation of games.

Nintendo Switch changed the game for expectations around portability and hybrid gaming. Previous generations were not spared their own moments that changed how the market works and how players play.

Steam Machine might be another milestone. Not that it eliminates all gaming platforms, but it might prompt other companies to rethink their strategies, pricing, access, and hardware design.

While not a console for everyone, the Steam Machine could herald a new era in gaming for those with lower-end hardware, those invested in the Steam gaming community, and those seeking a new way to game with greater flexibility and lower cost.
