PS3 RIP AUG 19 2010

By fishdalf, Posted 19 Aug 2010

Title says it all really. Today was the day my PlayStation 3 died. It was the second one I've owned after the hard-drive on the first one decided it'd had enough. This time I got the dreaded Yellow Light of Death and nothing will turn on now. It also swallowed a disc, but I took it apart and salvaged it.

The most annoying thing about the whole thing was the fact that I was one trophy off of a platinum on Ratchet & Clank and now in order to get it I have to complete the game again twice. That's another forty hours of my life spent on a game I've already been through nearly twice already. I've also lost nearly 300 hours of Pro Evolution Soccer editing, but I can live with that until the new one comes out October, plus I've lost a few games from my hard-drive such as Worms and Bomberman, but hopefully I'll be able to re-download them for free via my account.

On the sunny side I've just ordered a nice shiny new PS3 250gb Slim from the catalogue, which comes packaged with ModNation Racers and an extra DualShock 3 controller. Oh and i complained to EA yesterday about one of their games and they responded by offering me a free game of theirs of my choice, which was nice. So I guess there's a few plus points to focus on, whilst trying to block from my mind the hard work put into that machine.

  • wait i'm confused, so last year you lost a PS3 or did your PS3 just die?

  • @BrunoBRS: Hahaha fixed. It seems I was living one year in the past.

  • RIP PS3

Ive had couple of 360s go that way.  I hope my PS3 doesnt follow them.  Consoles dont seem to last very long these days.  My SNES and Mega Drive are nearly 20 years old and both work fine.

  • oooooohhhh...

my friend's 360 died, and he can only get repair if he ships it to the US, pays for it and pays for repair. he doesn't know if he sells all his games and buys a PS3 or gets another 360.

  • Had the same issue, mine turned out to be the power supply.  You can always do what I do and keep turning it on and off repeatedly even if you get the yellow light.  Thats what I did and after about 5-10 minutes it would start up and run fine.

  • Might try that tomorrow for the sole purpose of getting my saves back

  • PSN games can always be re-downloaded from the store in the Downloads section of your account too, so no worries there. The only thing that really sucks is that it now means your PSN account is activated on a broken PS3 and there's no way for you to deactivate it (if you did activate it), meaning it costs you one download out of 5 from each game that were downloaded on it.

mm.. I was thinking you could take the HDD out and put it in the new PS3, but I just remembered that it will ask you to format it upon booting the new PS3. Unfortunately, not even Linux can access a PS3's HDD files, so you can't even connect it to a computer to get the saves.. talk about this, Linux is the only OS that recognizes every single format I could ever think of, yet it cannot access a PS3 HDD.. Sony sure thought out their approach so nobody could mess with their console this time around.

  • Sorry to hear man.  Hopefully your new Slim will work fine though :D

  • I will assume that it was given a propor burial... Also, Welcome to the world of shiny slime PS3's. i own one... and it's my lovely machine of awesome.

But sadly i'm playing persona 4 right now... so it's been genefolding for the past 3 days. lol It still loves me.

  • score 1 for my 1985 NES. Although my SNES is in even better condition. I

remember my first PSX dying :(. Hard times.

Butapparently, some good came out of it.

  • One had to go to make space for a new. Enjoy your new slim and all the new games. I thought ModNation Racers was only a PSP version.

That 300 hours of PES should be painful though.

    Posted Aug 20, 2010

  • Well there's probably two thing's I could do with it. Smah it to pieces and film it, or get a bit of cash by giving it to a repair shop on the cheap.

Ah well, best case scenario my new Slim comes tomorrow, but it's probably going to be sometime next week now. Worst case scenario is the catalogue have none in stock and I have to wait weeks to months for it.

Ah well, my free game from EA came today.

  • I never knew the term yellow light of death until now. Btw we should have a minute silence. btw dont you warranty for it? you can send the thing back for repairs.

    Posted Aug 20, 2010

  • Nah my warranty expired ages ago.

    Posted Aug 20, 2010

  • *takes of hat* May your PS3 rest in peace .

    Posted Aug 21, 2010

  • I may post a picture of my new born when it arrives.

    Posted Aug 21, 2010

  • Every ending has a new beginning. Trust me, you 're gonna love your 2509slim PS3, just take it easy mate :) Thinking of sending a complain letter to EA myself too :P

    Posted Aug 21, 2010

  • GRRR Only just found out I could have paid a small fee for next day delivery. Would have definately done that.

    Posted Aug 21, 2010

  • I know the feeling. It hurts losing precious saved data.

    Posted Aug 21, 2010

  • Aww that sucks. Hopefully you get a better one soon! :D

    Posted Aug 21, 2010

  • What did you say that made them give you a free game?

Sucks that you got the YLOD though, I've been through it once.
