My Top 5 Favorite Playstation 3 Games

"Everyone has a personal taste but these are the games that will remain my favorite Playstation 3 games of all time."

The PlayStation 3 has seen a lot of positive and negative remarks. With the large-scale panic caused when the PlayStation Network was hacked in 2011 to the recent successful PlayStation Plus, but despite these plights and successes this amazing piece of technology has had a fantastic series of titles that have delighted gamers for years. The PlayStation 3 has continued the PlayStation 2’s legendary reputation and selection of games while birthing new creations that are planned to continue onto the next generation. Everyone has a personal taste but these are the games will remain my favorite PlayStation 3 games of all time.

Killzone 2

At E3 2005 the debut trailer for Killzone 2 was shown, shocking viewers of the capabilities of the PlayStation 3.  Although it was later revealed that it was pre-rendered video the final product in February of 2009 was nevertheless outstanding, despite quickly fixed latency issue. The single-player showcased the hostile planet of Helghan in a varied amount of elaborately detailed environments as the ISA attempted to defeat the renegade race of humans. Even with the stellar single-player the multiplayer is what made Killzone 2 such a successful first-person shooter. The rewarding competitive arena allowed for constant growth in the intense battlefields that encouraged teamwork in order to succeed and maximize points. I never thought I would’ve dedicated so much time on a first-person shooter outside my Xbox 360, but Killzone 2 made that a reality.

inFamous 2, Artwork, PS3

inFamous 2

In Greek myth a hero is someone who exceeds the qualities of an ordinary man, regardless if they choose to walk the path of good or evil. In inFamous this idea is challenge as Cole Macgrath, a simple bike messenger destined for greatest, is given extraordinary powers by a mysterious device called the Ray Sphere and must decide the fate of millions of people. Where the original inFamous introduced this new world of super-powered humans inFamous 2 built and refined the story to create one the best single-player platformers on the market today by creating branching paths forged by different loyalties, new powers that went beyond Cole’s electrical abilities and a wonderful set of characters that responded to Cole’s actions. If you own a PlayStation 3 and want a rewarding single-player adventure that is both fun to play and has an excellent story with a large amount of replay value then pick up inFamous 2.

God of War 2, Artwork, PS3

God of War 3

Possibility the most notorious and popular franchise in the PlayStation library is the God of War franchise. Kratos’s adventure to take revenge on his father Zeus for betraying him in God of War 2 has been leading up to this. In order to complete his goal Kratos reignites the legendary Titanomachy and fights his way through Gods, Titans and death in one of the most brutal and graphic game of this generation. With some of the most impressive boss battles of this generation combined with unholy killing animations God of War III is not only one of my favorite games of the PlayStation 3 but of this generation.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, PS3

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Instead of continuing the popular Jak and Dexter franchise Naughty Dog took another route and decided to create a new franchise for the PlayStation 3. First released in November 19, 2007 Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune was highlighted by critics and consumers for the detailed musical score and level of detail. But no one expected for Naughty Dog to take such a massive leap in its sequel, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves. With an outstanding campaign that refined each concept of the original game and included one the best competitive third-person shooters on the PlayStation 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves was a unexpectedly shocking experience.

The campaign a massive step forward in the Uncharted series that mitigated puzzles for most intense battles and atmospheric content. Ranging from high-speed battles onto of barreling trains to attempting to survive the freezing in the mountains while morality wounded, each portion of the campaign made me wonder whether I was playing if this game was indeed part of the same game back in 2007. However the inclusion of a competitive and cooperative multiplayer was odd but it surpassed any expectation, even trumping a lot of negative speculation. It was a joyful success that spouted an incredible series of downloadable content and encouraged Naughty Dog to go further in the online competitive field for the sequel.

Resistance 3, Artwork, PS3

Resistance 3

Insomniac’s last game in the Resistance was definitely the best. Instead of maintaining the same military aspects of the previous games Resistance 3 took a more different route, focusing on post-apocalyptic atmosphere and the personal relationship between people. With the war lost and the Chimera focusing on completely eliminating the human race, instead of converting them in Chimera, people have gone into hiding attempting to simply survive. Taking control of hot-tempered Joseph Capelli, from Resistance 2, as he joins an old ally to stop what could be the second part the Chimera’s end of the world plot. And without his regenerative sentinel ability it’s going to be a difficult journey.

Where Resistance 3 outclasses the previous games was in its atmosphere. Each setting was beautiful crafted to highlight different portions of America after being ravaged by the Chimera war. While the multiplayer was above average it was the outstanding single-player that truly shined in this installment of the Resistance franchise. With improve gameplay mechanics and fantastic level design the campaign was easily worth the full price tag alone. It saddens me that Insomniac has decided to leave so many questions unanswered but the series will live on, at least they left the series on a high note.

The PlayStation 3 has had a terrific run, but like the PlayStation 2 everything must eventually end. After the PlayStation 4 conference it’s clear that Sony has been plans for the future of their system. A modified version of the Sony Entertainment Network, new titles such as Killzone Shadow Fall and easier developer tools ensures a bright future for the upcoming PlayStation system. But before you put your PlayStation 3 to rest remember all the fun you had collecting trophies and playing online for free, because the next generation is coming soon.

  • @Amaya It was on the list but I after some thought I decided it wasn't one of my top Playstation 3 games. Playing through MSG 4 for the first time was simply outstanding but the second time, not so much. These titles on the other hand had me playing through time more than two times.
