id Software Removing Denuvo Anti-Cheat from DOOM Eternal After Backlash

id Software removes unpopular Denuvo Anti-Cheat software after public reception

The recent inclusion of the Denuvo Anti-Cheat software to DOOM Eternal was unpopular to say the least. The PC community reported instability and performance issues after the update and id Software has responded. Deciding to remove the software.

The official post from executive producer Marty Stratton provided several reasons the decision was made to add Denuvo.

Protect BATTLEMODE players from cheaters now, but also establish consistent anti-cheat systems and processes as we look ahead to more competitive initiatives on our BATTLEMODE roadmap

Establish cheat protection in the campaign now in preparation for the future launch of Invasion – which is a blend of campaign and multiplayer

Kernel-level integrations are typically the most effective in preventing cheating

Denuvo’s integration met our standards for security and privacy

Players were disappointed on DOOM (2016) with our delay in adding anti-cheat technology to protect that game’s multiplayer

Stratton followed up by stating they're removing the software and that Bethesda was not responsible for this. Instead, that id decided that this was the best path for the game, and after seeing the response from their fans will remove it in the next PC update. In addition, id has discovered that the crashes relating to their code have been identified and fixed.

This was the right way to handle things and the fan response has been positive. With many thanking id for being open about the problem, explaining the situation, and showing they're listening to their fans.

DOOM Eternal is now available for PS4, PC, Xbox One, and Stadia.
