During the EA Play Live 2020 Event, the newest installment to the Star Wars franchise of games was officially announced as Star Wars: Squadrons. The new game is set to be a piloting game similar to Star Wars: X Wing Alliance, which released in 1999. Squadrons allows players to climb directly into the cockpit as a New Republic or Imperial pilot and fly their ships through various battle modes.

Squadrons Battle Capital Ship

According to EA's reveal, the multiplayer game modes include a 5v5 dogfight, and a Fleet Battle. Additionally, a single player campaign mode has also been included, which takes place after the events of Return Of The Jedi. During the multiplayer game modes, players will use the cockpits of their ships as their interface (UI) as they play the game, making this new addition a Star Wars flight simulator, complete with space battles mentioned above. While the 5v5 dogfight may seem self-explanatory, the Fleet Battle is a game mode that will be unfamiliar to those who have not played piloting games before.

Fleet Battles consist of multiple phases, including a planning, dogfight, and attack phase. The game mode begins by allowing players to strategically plan their attack, putting them directly in the boots of a Republic or Imperial soldier. Players then board their fighters for a dogfight, which will transition to the winning team attacking the enemy's capital ship and flagships. Similarly structured fleet battles were also featured in 2005's Star Wars Battlefront 2.

Squadrons UI

Eight playable ships were showcased during the gameplay reveal at EA play, including fighters, bombers, support ships and even interceptors. These ships will be cosmetically customizable, and each of  the 50 ship upgrades can be earned in-game, completely removing micro-transactions or a "pay to win" concept of gaming.

Star Wars: Squadrons will release on October 2 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. Additionally, the game will be released for next-generation consoles at a later, currently undetermined date.
