PlayStation 5 Won't Feature Backward Compatibility For PS1, PS2, or PS3 Games

PS5 won't play PS1, PS2, or PS3 games

With every new generation gamers ask the same thing about the latest console, backward compatibility. The reasons are prudent, with the discontinuation of older consoles keeping them repaired and functioning becomes problematic since they are required to play older games. Often publishers will re-release classics on modern systems through digital stores but this option is not always reliable, as seen with the problematic re-release of Mega Man Legends due to copyrighted material used in the game and Sony's policies.

With Microsoft confirming that most games will be playable on Xbox Series X, with Xbox Series S not featuring Xbox One X enhancements for Xbox 360 games, Sony confirmed the PS5 will not feature backward compatibility for PS1, PS2, and PS3 games.

Speaking to Famitsu (and translated by the fine folks over at Siliconera), PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan stated that PS4 compatibility was necessary for PS5 development. With over 100 million consoles that's a large market of people with PS4s. We know that Spider-Man Miles Morales, Horizone Forbidden West, and other future games will be available on PS4 and PS5. With 99% of the catalog of PS4 games being playable on PS5.

This will annoy many long time gamers but seeing that PS3 suffered from a major price issue because it launched backward compatible with all PS1 and PS2 games Sony is probably looking to avoid that issue. That or attempt to resell those classics to new customers.

The PS5 will launch this November 12th.
