Microsoft Increase Price of Xbox Live Gold to Encourage Purchasing Ultimate Pass
Microsoft encouraging gamers to upgrade to Ultimate Pass by increasing the price of Xbox Live Gold
News by Grayshadow on Jan 22, 2021
For days a rumor has been surfacing that Microsoft is increasing the price of Xbox Live Gold. Unlike Game Pass or Ultimate Pass Gold simply allows online access but has increased by $1 for 1 month and $5 for 3 months.
In comparison, the old price was $9.99 for 1 month and $24.99 for 3 months. Now it's $10.99 and $29.99. This doesn't seem like a big deal until you notice the price of Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Which is $14.99 a month or $39.99 for 3 months. Judging from the price increase and the small gap between the 2 services its easy to make the argument that Microsoft wants gamers to notice the difference and decide to pay the difference. As Xbox Live Gold is only online play and Ultimate Pass grants access to dozens of Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and mobile titles including new Microsoft published titles.
In addition, Microsoft has been purchasing big developers like Ninja Theory, Double Fine, and recently Bethesda. Some say they should just get rid of Gold and maintain Game Pass and Ultimate Pass but there are some who just want online play. Providing the option instead of not having it plus not everyone can afford the price of Ultimate Pass and Gold is all they can afford.
