It has recently been the 20th anniversary of the beloved Kingdom Hearts franchise. During the celebration event, Square Enix decided to make their fans happy with one last piece of news: Kingdom Hearts IV is on its way, and it’s looking better than ever!

The new Kingdom Hearts IV trailer footage includes a very realistic looking Sora who wakes up in Quadratum. Though it may be a cinematic trailer, it is still striking that everything looks so much more intricately detailed. This might be because the developers are moving on to the newly developed game engine Unreal Engine 5 after making the previous installment of the series in Unreal Engine 4. Since the engine is the same but updated, the transition would be easy for the developers this time around. In addition to Sora, the trailer also features the core characters Donald Duck and Goofy.

“We’re thrilled to celebrate the series’ 20th anniversary with the announcement of two new KINGDOM HEARTS titles,” said KINGDOM HEARTS series Brand Manager, Ichiro Hazama. “We’d like to thank the fans for all of their support over the years, and we can’t wait for them to experience all that’s to come for Sora.”

“Sora is an original Disney video game hero like no other, beloved by our team, and fans across the world. We’ve been honored to work with Tetsuya Nomura and his team for two decades to introduce these original stories of discovery, courage, and friendship,” said Nana Gadd, Director, Walt Disney Games. “This glimpse into Sora’s next adventure is just the beginning – we can’t wait to show more when the time is right.”

There is no additional information so far. Yet, we can say that even this small news has been received with a lot of excitement around the fans. Furthermore, it looks like even from this short trailer, fans are quick to theorize about the future of the franchise. Some argue that the realistic graphics are temporary, in that, the game will look realistic only when Sora is in Quadratum, and some argue that the series is getting a makeover to lose its cartoonish look. Either way, we all wonder when we’ll be able to play Kingdom Hearts IV and where the series will take us this time.
