As well as confirming a Summer 2022 release date for Final Fantasy XVI, Sony’s 2nd June State of Play event also revealed a release date for Striking Distance Studios’ The Callisto Protocol. The California-based studio is run by Dead Space creator Glen Schofield and this new title is heavily inspired by his previous work. The Callisto Protocol follows Jacob Lee, an inmate at Black Iron Prison as he fights for survival as those around him begin to mutate into the monstrous Biophage. Escape won’t be easy, however, as Black Iron Prison is located on Callisto, a so-called ‘dead moon’ orbiting the planet Jupiter.
Dead Space had the Plasma Cutter, and now The Callisto Protocol has the GRP. Primarily used by guards for crowd control, the GRP “can freeze a rushing enemy in their tracks, or even throw Biophage into a nearby turbine fan”. For Schofield emphasizing Callisto’s oppressive atmosphere was key to creating a scary experience for players, describing the moon as “desolate” and “isolated”, he wants players to feel "hopeless" in their fight for survival. Protagonist Jacob Lee is voiced by actor Josh Duhamel, best known for his work in Jupiter’s Legacy; Michael Bay’s Transformers films, and video games like Call of Duty: World War II and Skylanders: SuperChargers.
The Callisto Protocol will be released on PS4, PS5, XBOX One, XBOX X|S, and PC on December 2, 2022.
