Sony Complete $3.6 Billion Bungie Acquisition

The Destiny developers join the PlayStation family.

Sony Interactive Entertainment has completed its acquisition of Destiny developers Bungie. First announced in January of 2022, the deal is estimated to cost approximately $3.6 billion and will allow the studio to accelerate the "hiring process across the entire studio" and help Bungie become "a global multi-media entertainment company."

During the early 2000s, Bungie worked closely with Microsoft to develop Halo: Combat Evolved and its immediate sequels for the Xbox and Xbox 360. In 2010 they were purchased by Activision and began working on first-person space MMO Destiny. In 2019 they terminated their partnership with Activision and re-released Destiny 2 as a free-to-play game to great success. As of 15th July 2022, "the agreement to acquire Bungie has closed" and Sony can officially welcome Bungie into the PlayStation family.

In January 2022, Joe Blackburn and Justin Truman of the Destiny Development Team confirmed that Bungie would retain the "full creative independence" of Destiny and that the game would not become a PlayStation exclusive.

Bungie has previously said that its games will continue to be "self-published" and "creatively independent", and with the acquisition, Bungie is aiming to expand its horizons beyond video games. Could this mean a Destiny film or television series is on the horizon? Sony has been increasing output in that area in the past year with the Uncharted film adaptation and television adaptations of games including The Last of Us and Twisted Metal in development. There really isn't a better place than PlayStation Productions for Bungie to partner with as they aim to become a "global multi-media entertainment company."
