HBO’s The Last of Us has officially been renewed for a second season after performing incredibly well over the course of the first two episodes.

HBO’s adaptation of The Last of Us has proved to be a very rare thing: a good adaptation of a video game. Following the success of the first two episodes, HBO has decided to officially renew the series for a second season. We haven’t even seen the third episode, at time of writing, and HBO already has a whole lot of faith in this new series.

This news was announced by the official Last of Us Twitter account in a simple tweet that states that the series “will return for another season.” It’s great to see that something that is clearly resonating with fans is getting the attention it deserves, and the attention it has received is quite intense. The first episode, as reported by Deadline, had 4.7 million viewers in the United States. That’s the highest non-Game of Thrones debut since 2010, when Boardwalk Empire launched. Then the second episode, as reported by Variety, had 5.7 million viewers. Even more than the first episode.

To further sweeten the whole thing, the series received rave reviews from the critics who were allowed to watch the whole series ahead of time. So, hopefully that means that the rest of the series is as great as the first two episodes have thus far managed to be.

HBO is also being very clever with its marketing here, as the company has decided to place the first episode on YouTube for free. So, if you don’t have HBO Max or a streaming company with an agreement with HBO, then you can check out the first episode entirely free of charge. It’s a pretty great episode, according to the many people who have so far enjoyed it, and perhaps it will be the same for you.
