During Sony's latest PlayStation Showcase, there was no shortage of interesting announcements. Amongst these various announcements was Giant Squid's newest game, Sword of the Sea, which is an upcoming adventure game that will be a PS5 exclusive. Sword of the Sea seems to combine gameplay from both Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater and Thatgamecompany's previous title, Journey. The title has also been dubbed by the developers as their “most ambitious game to date.”

Giant Squid is known for their visually stunning games and Sword of the Sea is no different. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the game's developers, Giant Squid’s developers are the masterminds behind Abzu and the action-adventure game, The Pathless, where you play as a master archer who must defend their island home from a deadly curse that is slowly killing the gods. Meaning fans can expect yet another visual spectacle.

While the trailer didn't give much to go on, as the trailer itself was composed of scenic desert locales filled with giant ruins piercing through the rolling sand dunes. This isn't much but it certainly grabbed many people's attention. What we can go on is that your main means of traversal is sailing, well in this case skating across the land. The world is your skatepark and it seems to be reminiscent of the mobile Alto games such as Alto’s Adventure and Alto’s Odyssey. Players will also be able to acquire a variety of different sandboards to surf across these jaw dropping locations seen in the trailer.

As for the actual world in which the game is set. Sword of the Sea, is set in a beautiful yet abandoned world where as the game puts it, “the terrain flows in constant waves”. Your main form of traversal will be your Hoversword, which are the sandboards that were mentioned earlier. You take on the role of Wraith, who has been resurrected and must restore this barren and empty land to breathe new life into its emptiness. You will venture into ruins, shipwrecks, across deserts and ancient battlefields. You will also need to face giant creatures who wish to put Wraith's journey to an end, though it's unclear if they are an enemy or an obstacle.

Giant Squid was first formed back in 2013 by Matt Nava, who has worked as a director for some of the most breathtaking gaming experiences such as Flower and Journey, from which their latest game takes plenty of inspiration. The studio has since become easily recognizable thanks to their creative and trademark art direction and we cannot wait to see what their latest title has in store for players.
