You know what they say, all good things must come to an end. As of today, Charles Martinet retires his historic twenty-eight-year run as everyone’s favorite red-hat wearing plumber. In addition to supplying the voice of Mario, Martinet would also be stepping away from Luigi, Waluigi, and Wario as well. Charles Martinet, first voiced Mario in the 1994 educational game, Mario Teaches Typing for PC. It wasn’t until Mario’s Game Gallery in 1995 where he would formally debut as the iconic mascot. When Super Mario 64 launched in 1996, his career would effectively change forever, cementing himself as a gaming and voice-acting legend. If you go up to any gamer and go, “wahoo!”, they know where that’s from a mile away.
Charles Martinet brought so much life into the character of Mario. According to Nintendo of America, Charles has officially transitioned from Mario’s voice actor to Mario Ambassador. Charles will now be traveling all over the world, celebrating the love for all thing’s Mario with the fans! Twenty-eight years as one character is a monumental milestone for any actor. Soon to follow this announcement of Charles Martinet’s retirement will be a special message by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Martinet himself. It is a sad but joyous day for Mario fans worldwide. Time sure does fly when you are having fun, huh?
Charles's interpretation of the character has lasted almost five console generations! From the Nintendo 64 to Nintendo Switch, Charles has been putting smiles on the face of children and adults alike. Charles’ last video game role as Mario and Luigi seems to be last year’s Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope. Charles would ultimately end his role earlier this year as Mario’s Father in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Now that is a poetic exit. We all wish Charles Martinet good luck and much happiness as he transitions to the next chapter of his life. Wahoo!
