The gaming industry has been filled with announcements of acquisitions and mergers, with many developers being acquired by bigger developers and publishers, and many with announcement rumors abound. The most recent of these rumors involve none other than Sega, however, Chief Operating Officer Shuji Utsumi has put these rumors to rest stating that the company was not looking for a buyer and was instead looking to bring their IPs to other platforms as well as buying out companies such as Rovio.

As stated above, acquisitions seem to happen every other month and with each new acquisition, new rumors start to spread. The most recent being that Microsoft had interests in acquiring Sega. These rumors aren't that new as they began as far back as the early 2000’s, during the rise of the rumor that the original Xbox had compatibility to run Dreamcast games after the consoles untimely demise. Though the talks did sadly fall through but it did lead to Sega becoming the third-party developer we know it today, with many of its titles being released on the Xbox systems and even the Xbox Game Pass. A good example is with the Persona series and most recently, the upcoming Like A Dragon: Infinite Wealth.

Shuji Utsumi’s statement came from an interview with CNBC that was first reported by Dexerto, the statement further emphasized the disinterest that Sega had in being acquired by Microsoft, and that they would not be bought out anytime soon. Though the company has no interest in being acquired by Microsoft, Utsumi did say that Sega had interest in bringing more of its properties to various other platforms after the success of both Sonic The Hedgehog movies at the box offices. It should be noted that this news comes nearly a month after Microsoft had finally completed its acquisition of Activision Blizzard for around $68.7 million.

Probably the biggest fuel to the acquisition rumors came from the leaked FTC internal documents that seemed to imply that Microsoft had interest in buying both Sega and Bungie since 2020. These documents contained numerous pieces of information such as an email that Xbox lead, Phil Spencer had sent to Microsoft CEO, Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood. This deal seemed to fall through as eventually Sony would acquire the Destiny developer for $3.6 million. While Sega didn't get acquired by Microsoft, we did learn that we can expect to see more interesting projects involving Sega's IPs.
