Hellraid Drops PS3, 360 And Moves To PS4, Xbox One With New Engine

A new engine means a fresh start for Hellraid. PS3 and 360 owners will need to accept that.

Developer Techland has re-launched Hellraid through their own Chrome Engine 6, pushing it to the new generation of platforms. Now, the first-person fighter will go to PC, Playstation 4 and Xbox One. Its announcement comes with a gameplay trailer.

In a pretty dick move by Techland, Hellraid will no longer release on previously announced platforms, Playstation 3 or Xbox 360. We guess it’s about time for games to be standardized on the latest consoles, but usually companies honor the announcements they make. It must suck if you’re a Dead Island fan that was anticipating this choppy-slashy fling on your good old console.

Still, at the very least, Hellraid looks a lot better now. And with “better,” we really mean shinier, with a lot more environmental detail. Actually, now it looks like the game it announced at first, when it unveiled the Dead Island mod as a full release. Where models looked dated and flat at first, the new engine makes for a much more credible world. This is the same tool that’s used for making their other game, Dying Light.

Also, combat seems a lot more diverse, with multiple weapons, a range of spells, monster variety and a few more interesting environments than Hellraid previously showed off. With reactive enemies, upgradable skills and co-op, it sounds like a pretty exciting brawler.

Hellraid has been pushed to 2015, probably to fit all of it in the new engine. An Early Access build will become available in fall of 2014 on Steam. Apparently, selling millions of Dead Island copies and having Dying Light coming out isn’t enough to fund this independent venture. Business!
