Just a week after Sony State of Play May 2024, the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 unveiled several titles that are anticipated to be released soon. Exciting new trailers for games like Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, State of Decay 3, Gears of War: E-Day, and Doom: The Dark Ages are just a few of the many franchises fans can expect to play soon.
The launch date of World of Warcraft's upcoming expansion, The War Within, was also revealed during an event. Aside from Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, and Assassin's Creed Shadows, there were also debuts with games like Winter Burrow, Atomfall, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33. In addition to all that, Xbox also unveiled the gameplay for a new Call of Duty game, Black Ops 6.
While most of us have already watched the showcase, we've decided to pick the top 10 most highly anticipated games.
Gears of War: E-Day
Finally, after five long years, we have some idea of what The Coalition has been doing since Gears 5 came out. According to the first trailer, the highly anticipated sequel to Microsoft's brutal cover shooter franchise Gears of War: E-Day will take place in the past when protagonist Marcus Fenix is much younger. Returning home fourteen years prior to Gears of War, combat heroes Dom Santiago and Marcus Fenix encounter a fresh terror: the Locust Horde. Horrific and merciless, these underground monsters emerge from their lairs and lay siege to humankind.
Blur Studio and The Coalition collaborated with Unreal Engine 5 to create an eye-popping trailer that announces the series' upcoming big part. The trailer, however, was tuned for streaming and did not reflect the actual in-game footage. Sadly, there wasn't any announcement for the release date, but Gears of War: E-Day will most likely be exclusive to PC and Xbox and won't be available on competing platforms like the PS5.
Doom: The Dark Ages
The long-awaited single-player dark fantasy action first-person shooter from the illustrious id Software, Doom: The Dark Ages, was unveiled, marking the return of the invincible Doom Slayer. Doom: The Dark Ages is the predecessor to Doom (2016). In it, we take control of the powerful Slayer and fight demonic hordes in realistic, brutal battles set in a grand cinematic universe with gods, kings, and monsters. In addition to his superhuman abilities and extravagant weaponry, the Slayer will also summon his enormous Atlan mech to engage in combat with gigantic animals and reclaim the sky upon his vicious mount: a cybernetic war dragon powered by jets.
Doom: The Dark Ages will be available on PC, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Series X|S in 2025.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, developed by Sandfall Interactive, is a reactive turn-based role-playing game that will take you to a surrealist new world influenced by the La Belle Epoque era of France, which is known for its rich art and is an exquisite foundation for the game's world. Joining the Expeditioners on their arduous mission to break the Paintress' death cycle will take us on an adventure through an elegant fantasy world filled with strange creatures, terrifying enemies, and clues about the past.
Aside from the announcement that it will be available on Xbox Game Pass, Xbox Series X | S, and PC in 2025, not much is known about this enigmatic Xbox title.
Dragon Age: The Veilguard
Dragon Age: The Veilguard's new teaser, released by BioWare and Electronic Arts, introduces us to the seven companions, each having a backstory waiting to be uncovered.
Continuing the narratives, settings, and people from the original Dragon Age games, we will venture into a realm filled with dangerous paths, gorgeous towns, and forests, all while being entangled in battles and unknown magics. You and your companions will face off against two corrupted gods who have escaped from the clutches of darkness and are determined to wipe humanity from the face of the earth and you are the reliable individual that Thedas has been searching for. In your quest to prevent the gods from bringing ruin to the world, you are free to act and play according to your desires.
Despite the name change, BioWare's Dragon Age: The Veilguard was on display at the Xbox Games Showcase, providing us with their best look at the game thus far. With a gameplay preview scheduled for June 11, Dragon Age: The Veilguard is expected to arrive in the fall of 2024.
Mixtape
Mixtape is the next project from the studio Beethoven & Dinosaur. It's a game about three best friends set off on an adventure together, where we take part in several narrative pieces that delve into the formative memories of teenagers. From skating and flying to late-night photoshoots at a deserted theme park and beyond, the story is told through a mixtape of humorous and cheerful gameplay. Beginning with the first kiss and ending with the last dance, it covers every moment of adolescent friendship. Gameplay in Mixtape is structured in a unique way that promotes diversity, surprise, and laughter.
Developed by the same folks that brought you The Artful Escape and Beethoven & Dinosaur, Mixtape will be available on PC, Xbox Series X | S, and Xbox Game Pass in 2025.
Mecha BREAK
Mecha BREAK is a multiplayer shooter where we take control of mechs, personalize their appearance, and engage in combat with gigantic war machines across different surroundings. The game offers a variety of mech and weapon types, as well as three game modes: a 6v6 Battlefield mode, a 3v3 Arena mode, and a PvEvP version that supports up to sixty players. Each mech can have a unique look due to players' ability to customize its entire body and equip additional attachments, giving them better stats and making them more versatile.
The Xbox Closed Beta for Mecha Break is set to launch on Xbox Series X in August 2024, following the full release in 2025, and one of the most anticipated features of the August Closed Beta Test will be the 6v6 Battlefield mode. The game will also be available on PlayStation 5.
Winter Burrow
While Xbox showcased mostly the big entries, Winter Burrow, a far simpler adventure, couldn't be ignored. It's a cozy survival game set in a snowy world where you build your burrow while exploring an open environment. You play as a little mouse and will spend your days exploring fast-paced worlds in quest of your missing aunt and gathering supplies to repair your childhood home. Winter Burrow combines casual, welcoming gameplay with difficult yet manageable survival mechanics. During your free time in your burrow, you can knit warm garments to ward off the winter chill, decorate your space with charming trinkets, and get ready for scavenging.
Winter Burrow will be available on PC, Xbox Game Pass, and Xbox Series X | S in early 2025, though I'd personally love to play it on Nintendo Switch.
Fragpunk
Fragpunk was among the new games that were featured, and it certainly didn't disappoint. It's an action-packed squad-based 5v5 hero shooter that encourages players to activate power-up cards to establish the rules of combat for each new round. Bad Guitar Studios aims to shake things up with their fast-paced gunplay and almost insane ability cards, featuring fast-paced gameplay, a cast of ten playable characters, fourteen weapon types, four environments, and seventy shard cards.
Fragpunk is set to launch in 2025 on PC and Xbox Series X | S.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers is an upcoming soulslike action RPG developed by Leenzee Games and published by 505 Games. The game takes us to the dark late Ming Dynasty, a time plagued by schismatic tribes and an enigmatic disease that transforms humans into demons. As Wuchang, a fighter plagued by amnesia and Ornithropy—a terrible disease that bestows tremendous power—you find yourself in this gripping narrative. Depending on the decisions you make, the secrets you uncover, and the friends you choose to trust, you will be able to put together Wuchang's past in one of the few multiple endings.
Wuchang: Fallen Feathers will be released in 2025 and be available on Xbox Game Pass from day one. Further details to be released next year before it launches on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, Xbox Series X | S, and PlayStation 5.
Fable
There hasn't been a new update on Fable since last year’s trailer. Yesterday, a new trailer for the Fable reboot was unveiled, and this reboot marks Xbox Game Studios' most anticipated upcoming game.
