Dragon Ball FighterZ Has Loot Boxes, No Microtransactions

Loot boxes, 2 types of currency, but no microtransactions?

The year of the loot box hasn't finished and continues on into 2018. Bandai Namco has confirmed that loot boxes, in the form of capsules, will come to Dragon Ball FighterZ but you must earn them and cannot purchase them through microtransactions.

Kotaku's senior reporter, Michael Brandon Fahey, confirmed this on Twitter when he asked the publisher about loot boxes:

Just confirmed with Bandai Namco that there is no way to purchase capsules (loot boxes) with real money, it's all in-game currency earned through battles.

While loot boxes have generated large amounts of backlash unlike Star Wars: Battlefront 2 players cannot purchase these items to gain an advantage over other players. In a competitive fighting game like Dragon Ball FighterZ having a balanced system absent of a pay-to-win system is paramount to growing a community.

It does seem strange that Dragon Ball FighterZ does include 2 types of currency. One is called Zeni which is earned by playing battles and the second is Premium Z Coins which is earned by trading in duplicate items. It seems odd that the game would offer duplicate items in the first place, in addition, why doesn't the duplicate items simply transfer to one type of currency instead of a second? Perhaps one type of currency is worth more than another, encouraging players to play more than to rely on duplicate items to purchase more loot boxes? On the other hand, this could be in response to EA's Star Wars Battlefront 2 controversy and was altered to avoid a similar issue.

Dragon Ball FighterZ launches January 26th for Xbox One, PS4, and PC.
