Publisher and developer Starbreeze has been going through a rough fiscal year since the launch of Overkill's The Walking Dead with their CEO stepping down and the company getting raided for insider trading. Starbreeze has taken another hit by returning publishing rights of System Shock 3 back to developer OtherSide Entertainment.
Starbreeze stared they had intentions to invest $12 million into the project, with Starbreeze’s CEO at the time even saying that the publisher was a fan of the series. These were the other financial terms of OtherSide and Starbreeze’s 2017 deal:
Starbreeze will be able to recoup 120% of its full investment including marketing costs. Starbreeze share of revenues will become 50% after the investment is recouped. OtherSide Entertainement will retain 100% of the intellectual property relating to System Shock 3.
In a recent article by Eurogamer, which conveyed the rise and the current dire situation of Starbreeze, the company to refocus its plans on future products and it looks like publishing System Shock 3 was just too much.
The studio does have publishing rights to DoubleFine's Psychonauts 2 but we'll have to wait and see how the future looks for Starbreeze.
