Nintendo Switch Online was not popular when it was announced. Gamers would now have to pay a fee to play online on the Nintendo Switch. However, it seems thanks to constant support and the addition of SNES games the service has become incredibly popular. With subscriber counts nearly doubling from 8 million to 15 million in the last year.

Nintendo Online now has 15 million paid subscribers, up from 8 million this time last year.

This means that approximately 29% of Nintendo Switch owners subscribe to the online service.

For reference: PS+ has 38.8m subscribers, accounting for approx 37% of PS4 owners.

The news comes from Daniel Ahmad from Niko Partners. This surge of subscribers is likely due to the release of the Nintendo Switch Lite, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the inclusion of SNES games for free.

Those still holding out for a more powerful version of the Switch will have to wait longer. As Nintendo confirmed there are no plans to release a new model this year.
