GTA 6 is More Reactive Because Rockstar is Adding More Dynamic NPCs and World Systems

From fitness and sleep tracking to relationship choices, dynamic robberies, and smarter NPCs, Rockstar is making GTA 6 feel more like a living world.

Grand Theft Auto 6 is shaping up to be more than just another massive open-world crime game. In a series of preview sessions, a handful of systems have been revealed that will track Jason and Lucia’s physical condition, relationship, fighting skills, and how they interact with the world around them.

As more details emerge, it’s becoming clearer that Rockstar is working hard to make GTA 6 respond to your actions, not just ferry you from one mission to the next. It also seems that even small choices can have lasting effects on how the world and its characters react to you throughout the game.

GTA 6 Jason and Lucia Together

One of the biggest additions is the expanded fitness system, which brings back an idea previously seen in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Reports say GTA 6 will have several gyms where you can work out with Jason and Lucia, and the outcome will affect their attributes. You will need to complete three exercises during a workout session, while cardio can improve stamina and regular exercise can improve overall health.

The game will also track how much sleep your characters get through an application on their in-game phones. The system can reportedly show whether Jason or Lucia is well-rested, and being tired can affect the regeneration of certain attributes.

This suggests that Rockstar is treating physical condition as more than a cosmetic feature, especially if your character's stamina and health can influence how you perform during missions. It also makes the phone feel more useful because it is monitoring parts of your characters' lives that can actually matter during gameplay.

Jason and Lucia's relationship is receiving similar attention. Rockstar has confirmed that the two characters can break up and stop being romantically involved while continuing to work together as criminal partners. You can therefore maintain their romance or treat their relationship more professionally as the story progresses.

The game will also reportedly include situations where you can decide whether to tell one character something immediately or hide it, with either choice potentially causing consequences later. This means your decisions may shape how the characters interact with each other and influence events that unfold later in the story.

That could make the relationship more important than simply having different conversations between missions.

Rockstar has likened some of these scenarios to real-life relationships, implying that Jason and Lucia could have arguments, infidelity, secret spending, and other issues. How their relationship might be will decide how the story ends. Multiple endings are already confirmed for GTA 6

Even if it doesn’t affect the main story, it can still change how the characters interact with each other, especially during missions and conversations inside vehicles. These smaller reactions could make your relationship with each character feel more dynamic throughout the game.

Furthermore, the two protagonists will have different ways to fight. Lucia is said to be more agile and technical, employing techniques based on kickboxing and mixed martial arts, while Jason employs more powerful punches and a traditional street-brawler style.

Rockstar is also giving players more control over companions during certain situations. Jason can reportedly tell Lucia to hurry, causing her to move faster and maneuver more aggressively through traffic, which could make chases and robberies feel less predictable.

NPC behavior is getting a major upgrade as well. It seems the response of civilians will change depending on how visibly armed you are, with some NPCs potentially trying to disarm you and others running away in terror.

That’s a big change from the more predictable crowd reactions in earlier GTA games, when gunfire usually sent crowds stampeding away. You can also pick up accessories dropped by NPCs, like hats and glasses, and wear them yourself, which could even help you change your appearance when escaping from the police.

Police officers will not all behave identically, either.

During a preview session, a heavier police officer reportedly chased Jason on foot before becoming exhausted and struggling to continue. This feature could connect with the game's broader physical systems, as your stamina and fitness might become important during pursuits.

The vehicle physics should also generate more unpredictable moments. In the extended gameplay footage for GTA 6, the dramatic police crashes were apparently not scripted, with police cars reacting differently when shot at.

Rockstar was even able to recreate a crash similar to one shown in the trailer during a preview session. That suggests the game's vehicle physics can produce spectacular crashes without requiring every moment to be manually scripted.

Robberies can also develop beyond their original objectives. During one preview, a cashier revealed that there was a safe in the back room after being threatened, giving the player a choice between going for a larger score or escaping with the money already stolen.

Random crime events can create even more unexpected opportunities. One preview featured two masked women getting trapped while attempting to rob a jewelry store before asking Jason and Lucia for help, with players apparently able to assist them and then steal the jewelry themselves.

What makes that event particularly impressive is that Rockstar reportedly told the previewer that its developers had not encountered it for months during testing.

That gives you an idea of how many systems could be operating in the background at once. An event can exist in the game, have specific conditions that trigger it, and remain unseen by Rockstar's testers for months. That could mean players will regularly encounter situations that even the developers did not expect them to find quickly.

NPCs will also dress differently depending on where they are, making each area feel more distinct and believable. People around gyms reportedly wear sportswear, while NPCs in Jason’s neighborhood wear more ordinary clothing. These small details should help the world feel more naturally connected to the places people live and spend time in.

These details might seem minor individually, but they help reinforce the idea that GTA 6's world is being designed as a functioning environment rather than a collection of locations waiting for you to visit.

There has also been discussion around GTA 6's regional release schedule, with PlayStation Store information reportedly showing different launch windows across regions. If the schedule remains unchanged, some players could potentially access the game earlier than others because of their time zone.

Ultimately, these details show why the smaller systems in GTA 6 could be just as important as its main story. You will have Jason and Lucia's criminal journey, but you can also manage their fitness, monitor their sleep, develop or damage their relationship, experiment with their different combat styles, interact with unpredictable NPCs, and stumble into random crimes
