Play As Vecna In Stranger Things VR, Coming Winter 2023
Hit Netflix show gets the VR treatment in Winter 2023
News by AlexJohn on Nov 08, 2022
When the television show Stranger Things debuted in 2016 it became a cultural phenomenon overnight, helping to skyrocket streaming service Netflix to the top and popularise the concept of binge-watching. It revitalized the careers of Winona Ryder and David Harbour and kicked started those of younger cast members including Millie Bobby Brown and Finn Wolfhard.
Stranger Things follows a group of D&D-loving friends in 1980s Indiana. When one of the group is abducted, and a young girl with psychokinetic powers appears, the boys and their sleepy hometown of Hawkins become Ground Zero for an interdimensional invasion.
2022 saw the release of Stranger Things season 4 and introduced the monster behind all the strange goings on in Hawkins, and the apparent creator of the otherworld Upside Down that features heavily in the show. Inspired by classic slasher villains like A Nightmare on Elm Street's Freddy Kreuger, Vecna is a powerful, mysterious foe with a grudge against Hawkins and super-powered teenager Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
While a lot of Vecna's backstory is explained in the latter half of season 4, there is still plenty left unseen. Netflix is partnering with digital art studio Tender Claws to bring their hit sci-fi series to virtual reality. Playing as Vecna, in Stranger Things VR players will "become an explorer of unknown realities... [and] form the hive mind" that Eleven and her friends regularly come up against. The trailer shows Vecna creating the Upside Down and even being attacked by canine-like monsters called Demo-dogs. Players will be able to experience Stranger Things' story from Vecna's point of view, "invade minds and conjure nightmares" in this VR theatrical experience.
Stranger Things VR releases on all major platforms in Winter 2023.
