PlayStation 6 Rumor Already Making the Round

Players have worries about the possibility of a cheaper version of the PlayStation 6.

After Sony revealed the PS5 Pro, there has been much discussion about its pricing, and the possible list of PS5 Pro games is still among the communities. While the PS5 Pro discussions are still being discussed in the oven, recently, a rumor surfaced that the PlayStation 6 might be available in two different versions, one of which would be more reasonably priced, just like the Xbox Series S. Even though the PS5 Pro's price has been heavily criticized, this rumor has caused some players to be concerned rather than happy.

The rumor came to light by the infamous AMD leaker Kepler_L2 (via Reddit), who has some experience in the chip manufacturing industry. Kepler_L2 claims that Sony's next-gen console will have two System-on-a-Chip (SoC) options, one of which "will be affordable at least." Since both the disc and digital variants would employ the same system on a chip, we can rule out that possibility. A home console with a portable or remote player is one option, while a less expensive console with lower specifications is the other. For the gamers, it's all about the latter.

With the Xbox Series S, Sony proved their long-held belief that making an inferior console is a wrong strategy. More and more developers are speaking out about the difficulties of developing on Microsoft's cheaper current-gen OS. Assuming Sony follows suit, yet unappealing hardware specs will plague another generation. But if the rumor stands, how similar would a budget PS6 version be compared to the Xbox Series S? We already know that Sony may switch to ARM processors for the PS6 from AMD ones, according to certain job postings.

Given Sony's track record of success with the PS Portal, it would not be surprising if the company introduced a powerful device that could function as a handheld console and an accessory for the PlayStation 6 (the latter has been speculated about for some time). Reports about the PlayStation 6, the next generation of the console, first emerged during the rumors surrounding the PS5 Pro a few years ago; according to those sources, the PS6 is expected to be released in 2028.
