People who like video games and technology are very interested in the next-generation PlayStation portable. There are rumors and leaks that it might offer a unique mix of portability, power, and access to a massive library of games from different PlayStation generations.

The potential of this handheld gadget raises questions regarding performance, compatibility, and the role of cloud streaming in the game experience.

Cloud Streaming vs. Native Gameplay

Could the PlayStation handheld play PS5 games offline and stream PS6 games from the cloud? We hope not. The best thing about a portable is that you can play games anywhere, even without an internet connection.

While cloud-based solutions like GeForce Now on the Steam Deck are excellent, a PlayStation handheld running PS6 games must perform natively. If you rely on streaming, you might as well not have a dedicated PlayStation handheld.

Scalability of PS5 Games

One cool thing is that it's not too hard to make PlayStation 5 games run well on a handheld. We don't expect games to run at 1440p, but reducing CPU and GPU usage still lets them run smoothly. Given the alleged capabilities of the PlayStation 6 portable, there's no reason it couldn't run the entire PlayStation 4 catalog natively.

These games were graphically spectacular on the PS4, often running at 1080p, and they may convert wonderfully to a handheld of similar resolution.

Potential Docked Configurations

If a docked option is provided, raising the wattage and horsepower could allow even more complex gameplay. While this may be optimistic, scaling down PS5 games for portable performance appears doable.

The handheld might let players play games from older PlayStation generations, making a great library for people who wish to play old games again.

Multi-Generation Gaming

Imagine a portable that can play games from PlayStation 1, 2, 3, 4, and maybe even 5. There may not be support for physical discs, but a digital store might bring back memories of years of playing PlayStation games.

It might be impossible to make a PS3 emulator, but you can play older games on handheld PCs these days. But there may be limits based on the game. The idea of playing games from different generations on a portable is quite enticing to players who want both nostalgia and convenience.

Future of PS6 Games

We think the handheld will be able to play PS6 games on its own, but it might not have many exclusive games. New technologies that older gear couldn't handle have typically led to significant changes in gameplay. The next generation may not see as many major changes, yet the portable will likely be able to play some PS5 or PS6 titles.

It's likely to be based on the same architecture as the PS6, including machine learning and ray tracing technologies. However, the real question is whether the handheld has the horsepower to substantially beat PS5 performance.

Final Thoughts

In the end, the PlayStation handheld promises a mix of portability, backward compatibility, and native performance that could change how consumers play games on the go. Cloud streaming might be helpful, but the best thing about it is that you can play games without using as much CPU and GPU power.

The portable could become a must-have for both casual and serious gamers because it can play games from multiple PlayStation generations and may even run better when docked.
