Sony Targeting 2027 For PlayStation 6 Launch; Fans Say PS5's Just Getting Started

When Sony's current-gen console, PlayStation 5, came out in November 2020, it caused a huge demand that led to constant supply shortages that lasted well into 2022.  Recently, a new report suggesting that the PlayStation 6 might come out in 2027 has sparked a wave of mixed reactions among fans.

The rumor originated in a write-up on the subreddit, where an enthusiast summarized an article about a next-generation Blade Runner game—already in development at Supermassive Games—that was ultimately canceled.

After digging into the details, the post highlights Supermassive's parent company, Nordisk, which proudly touts its "Nordic home of PlayStation" status on its own website, handling everything from sales and marketing to logistics for Sony's past five console generations.

According to the leak, Nordisk is already working hand-in-glove with Sony on the PlayStation 6. Citing reputable insider Kepler L2, the report claims that Sony's collaboration with AMD on the PS6 system-on-a-chip (SoC) has reached tape-out—a major milestone typically achieved about two years before retail release—which lines up perfectly with a holiday 2027 launch window.

Knowing that the canceled Blade Runner game was supposed to be the PS6 launch game only makes people more sure that it will come out in 2027. But when people on Reddit weighed in, the excitement was surprisingly low.

Many users argued that the PS5 generation still feels fresh, with a wealth of standout titles and untapped potential yet to be fully explored. That tension between "generation just starting" and "plenty of amazing games already here" is nothing new.
