The Elder Scrolls 6 Reportedly Targets 2028 as New Sentinel Details Emerge

The Elder Scrolls 6 has finally received another meaningful update, although much of what we know about the game is still coming from rumors and reports rather than an official reveal. XBOX CEO Asha Sharma recently posted about playing the game, praising its scale and story, giving fans their first major update on the project in quite some time.

Sharma’s comments are especially interesting because Bethesda recently revealed more of its upcoming plans, including Fallout remasters, another Fallout project from Obsidian, continued support for Fallout 76, and Fallout 5 following The Elder Scrolls 6

Zenimax Online Studios is also expected to continue supporting The Elder Scrolls Online while helping Bethesda Game Studios with the wider Elder Scrolls franchise. These changes come as XBOX continues restructuring its studios and focusing more heavily on major franchises.

The biggest rumor right now is that The Elder Scrolls 6 could be called The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel.

According to the report discussed in the transcript, YouTuber EpicNate claims sources he considers reliable have provided the Sentinel name, while a former Bethesda Game Studios employee has also reportedly mentioned it. Fans on the Elder Scrolls subreddit have apparently reached the same conclusion independently, while Sentinel has previously appeared among rumored names for the game.

The name itself could have several meanings. According to the report, Sentinel is apparently the name of a city or town in Hammerfell, although it could also refer to the game's protagonist or their role as a guardian. Another possibility is that Sentinel could be the main city where much of the main story takes place.

The rumored release window is also significant. EpicNate reportedly claims that The Elder Scrolls 6 is currently targeting 2028, with the Fallout remasters potentially helping fill the gap before Bethesda's next major RPG arrives. If that target holds, fans would finally have a clearer idea of when they might actually get to play the game after years of waiting.

Bethesda is also reportedly continuing to develop its Creation Engine for the game. The transcript describes Creation Engine 3 as an evolution of the technology used for Skyrim and Starfield rather than an entirely new engine built from scratch.

That focus on user-generated content could become one of the more interesting changes in The Elder Scrolls 6. The Creation Club has reportedly already paid more than $10 million to creators, and the next Elder Scrolls game could take the concept further by making player-created content easier to access.

Instead of simply downloading traditional mods, players could potentially have easier access to creator-made missions, quests, levels, and minigames through a more streamlined system inspired by platforms such as Roblox and Minecraft.

Multiplayer remains much less certain.

There is currently no confirmation that The Elder Scrolls 6 will include a multiplayer component, and the report suggests that such a feature is unlikely to arrive at launch. Bethesda’s real focus seems to be on the single-player RPG experience, but the company’s larger interest in content created by users could one day lead to more interactive experiences.

XBOX executive Matt Booty has good news of his own, reportedly visiting Bethesda, chatting with Todd Howard, and seeing a demo of The Elder Scrolls 6. "The game looks wonderful and development is going along at a good pace," Booty wrote in the comments cited in the transcript.

Another major talking point is the platform strategy of the game. Based on the transcript, it sounds like The Elder Scrolls 6 is more and more likely to be an XBOX console exclusive, especially with Microsoft gearing up for their next generation of hardware.

Recent decisions to keep some major games within the XBOX ecosystem have fueled that speculation, although there is currently no concrete confirmation that The Elder Scrolls 6 will be exclusive. This uncertainty leaves the door open for a multiplatform release, especially if XBOX decides that reaching a wider audience is more important than keeping the game tied to its own hardware.

Zenimax Online Studios could also play an important role in getting the game finished. XBOX has reportedly confirmed that Zenimax Online will work closely with Bethesda Game Studios on the Elder Scrolls franchise while continuing to support The Elder Scrolls Online.

Looking beyond the launch of The Elder Scrolls 6, XBOX could also be preparing a much broader future for the franchise.

The success of Obsidian's new Fallout spin-off has raised the possibility of a similar approach for Elder Scrolls, where other studios could create smaller games set within the universe. That would give fans more Elder Scrolls content without forcing them to wait another decade or longer for the next mainline installment.

The wider Fallout roadmap makes that possibility particularly compelling. With Fallout 76 continuing to receive updates, Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas is reportedly receiving remasters, Obsidian is working on another Fallout project, and Fallout 5 is planned after The Elder Scrolls 6.

Microsoft appears interested in keeping its major RPG franchises active between mainline releases. The same strategy could eventually apply to Elder Scrolls, especially if Bethesda wants to avoid another extremely long wait for The Elder Scrolls 7.

For now, however, The Elder Scrolls 6 remains largely under wraps. The rumored Sentinel name, possible Hammerfell setting, reported 2028 target, expanded Creation Engine features, and potential XBOX exclusivity all give fans plenty to speculate about, but the official picture is still limited.

What is clear from the latest comments is that the project is progressing, and after years of waiting, players finally have another reason to start paying close attention to Bethesda’s next major RPG.
