Xbox's Bold New Strategy Could Redefine Console Gaming

The partnership with GOG and the ROG Ally project may signal the blueprint for Xbox's next-generation vision.

Although Xbox has never been afraid to try new things, 2025 may be the year that its long-term plan becomes apparent. Although official details are still few, Microsoft has been giving us hints about the direction of its next-generation system for months. Its latest actions with the Xbox ROG Ally and a new relationship with GOG may already be giving us an idea of what console gaming will look like in the future.

The Xbox ROG Ally's streamlined operating system caused a stir at Gamescom. This version, in contrast to the ordinary ROG Ally or Ally X, removes Windows to make it feel more like a specialized gaming console than a PC. It should be clear that Microsoft wants to seamlessly, intuitively, and approachably combine the Xbox and PC experiences. The goal now is to merge the two platforms, making switching between them seamless, rather than maintaining their current separation.

Playing Xbox games on a PC or vice versa is only one aspect of this idea. Microsoft is experimenting with giving Windows consoles and handhelds the same environment and interface. In this manner, the upcoming Xbox will be more like a custom-built gaming PC that feels console-simple than merely a console.

Hardware was not the most obvious indicator of this change; rather, the storefront approach was. The next Xbox will support more than simply the Xbox Store, as Microsoft has already announced. In the closed-off world of consoles, this was once unimaginable, but it is gradually becoming a reality. And that's where GOG comes into play.

GOG only revealed complete Xbox account connection this week. In actuality, this means you may start creating a DRM-free collection linked to your Xbox profile by logging into GOG with your Xbox login information. On paper, it is a little characteristic, but symbolically, it is enormous. Why, after years of defending its walled garden, would Xbox open this door? The response appears to be directly related to its future goals.

GOG will almost certainly be one of the shops supported by the new Xbox if it really does. Additionally, Steam and the Epic Games Store are likely to follow GOG if it joins. In addition to Xbox exclusives and Game Pass titles, the console would be able to run PC libraries, independent DRM-free collections, and even PlayStation ports that are available on Steam. For the first time in history, almost the whole gaming ecosystem could be centralized on a single device.

Imagine having a device in your living room that allows you to launch Fortnite from Epic, Halo from the Xbox Store, Elden Ring from Steam, and Cyberpunk 2077 from GOG, all without needing to switch between devices or operating systems. Microsoft appears to be aiming for the best of both worlds in the future, which combines the ease of console gaming with the versatility and openness of PC gaming.

Naturally, there are difficulties. Hardware still needs to combine pricing and power, licensing agreements can be complex, and storefront integration is difficult. However, the foundation being established now — with the GOG relationship and the console-like operating system of the Xbox ROG Ally — suggests that Microsoft is confident it can succeed.

This is especially intriguing, as it has the potential to alter the nature of competition. To bolster their hardware, Sony and Nintendo have historically relied on exclusives and closed ecosystems. Microsoft, on the other hand, is prepared to unleash the floodgates, placing a wager that its platform's key features will be flexibility and accessibility. If successful, it might even alter our definition of a console over the course of the next decade.

Although the ROG Ally project is still in its early stages, it offers an intriguing look at the values that will shape Xbox's aspirations for the future. Microsoft's upcoming device might completely conflate the distinction between a PC and a console, not merely compete with the PlayStation and Switch. Furthermore, Xbox's future may involve more than just winning the console wars if various shops do end up in the finished product. It might involve completely redefining them.
