Microsoft has been obtaining Halo domain names for a few years now. Halo2, Halo3, and Halo4.com are all owned by Microsoft Corporation with Halo4.com being purchased in 2011. The previous owner of Halo4.com could only say that he could not disclose any terms of the agreement; the assumption being he got A LOT of money.
Halo 4 releases on 11/6.
Halo.com, Halo1.com, Halo6.com, Halo7.com, and Halo8.com are not owned by Microsoft Corporations. However, according to Fusible, this week Microsoft acquired the following domains:
Microsoft acquired the domain names through the brand protection company MarkMonitor. As the terms behind the purchase of Halo4.com could not be disclosed it is unknown if or how much money the previous owners of these domains received.
This clearly means that Microsoft has further plans for the Halo franchise. This could mean further games or simply web content. Continuing the games through Halo 9 could become a bit excessive, and hopefully further games would not kill the series. The excitement behind Halo 4 needs to die down before further speculations are made.
