Sega has announced the long-awaited Sonic the Hedgehog 4, a direct sequel to the classic platforming games from the early '90s.

Formerly carrying the moniker "Project Needlemouse," Sonic's first classic adventure in more than 15 years will be episodic, with the first episode expected to be released in the summer.

Releasing for all major consoles, it will also have support for motion controls on Wii and PS3.

There is no set price or release date yet, so stay tuned to NoobFeed for the latest on the blue blur's return to 2D.

  • Its about time that the series reverted back to 2D. I couldn't be more happy with this recent announcement. :)

  • The best possible move at this point.  If it's anything like Sonic 2 and 3 then this will finally be what I've wanted from a Sonic game for a VERY long time.  I couldn't be happier.

  • I hope it's better than Sonic:Unleashed...

  • Glad it goes back to 2D, let's say Sonic's experience with 3D wasn't one of the best.. but episodic? Now that's a bit disappointing as it basically means they're going for the "milking" method.. None of the classic platforming games were longer than 1 or 2 hours at top.. what are they gonna do.. throw us 15 minutes episodes consisting of one zone each a la Penny Arcade Adventures? (which were pretty good, but could have been made into one single game, especially since Episode 3 and 4 have yet to even shed any kind of light).
