Fans of Heavy Rain, NoobFeed's most recent Game of the Year, may be a bit disappointed with David Cage's latest comments. In an interview with Eurogamer, the man in charge of Quantic Dream, the studio behind Heavy Rain, ruled out any possibility of a sequel to the 2010 Playstation 3 exclusive.

According to Cage, his studio created the 'interactive drama' genre to which Heavy Rain belongs, and it is important for the genre to be approached from different angles if it is to keep moving forward. And to achieve this, it is more logical to invent a new IP rather than making a sequel to a game with an established universe and gameplay.

While it is curious that a game selling over 2 million copies will not be getting a sequel, it is not wholly surprising that Quantic Dream starts from scratch. Heavy Rain itself is the spiritual successor to an old Quantic Dream IP, Indigo Prophecy, which shared Heavy Rain's focus on cinematics, storytelling and gameplay sequences driven forward by quick-time events.

Be that as it may, Heavy Rain fans will have to wait to see whether Quantic Dream's upcoming new game will live up to any expectations they may have had of a sequel.

  • Sadly i have not played heavy rain...but i am happy that they wont make a sequel. i find that sequels, specially in this day and age, ruin a series. exception of final fantasies which arent sequels of each other. to this day, i dont think i have ever truly played a sequel that has either added, or honored the original game (hey! God of War doesnt count! it was just a very long story) most cases, sequels ruin what a game should be (Xenosaga II).

That ofcourse, is my opinion. I know most gamers love to see game series continue to no end.

  • That is interesting... but I do see where they are coming from so who knows. I wouldnt be surprised if we saw something on the NGP later on.

  • Thank god. I'd much rather see a spiritual successor a la Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit with an entirely new story. Heavy Rain wrapped up. There's no need for a sequel and I think a brand new story would be much more effective.

  • @Buckley - Well, I did enjoyed Heavy Rain for its innovative gameplay mechanics. However, a sequel might not look good indeed, but at least another look-a-like Heavy Rain game would be great.
