Spyro the Dragon was one of the most acclaimed franchises for the original PlayStation. Spyro Reignited Trilogy brings back the iconic purple dragon, allowing modern and veteran gamers to experience some of the best platformers with a modern touch. The updated visuals give Spyro a much-needed update similar to Crash Bandicoot in the N.Sane Trilogy and like that title, the core mechanics are still as strong as ever. Spyro Reignited Trilogy provides the best adventures from Insomniac Games' creation and shows why Spyro is so beloved.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy includes 3 games, Spyro the Dragon, Spyro Ripto's Rage, and Spyro Year of the Dragon. Each one has been modernized with updated visuals and cutscenes that look absolutely stunning. Toys for Bob has done a fantastic job with each of the characters, especially Spyro who looks absolutely stunning. Much of the visuals carrying over in each adventure but the charming graphics never get old.

While the visuals have been modernized the controls have not. Toys for Bob have ensured that each adventure matches the original, including placement of enemies, the location of gems, and other secrets. Those familiar with the original Spyro trilogy can easily navigate the adventure with ease. However, if you're new it's recommended that you play the games in order.

The first game features a simpler level design, allowing the player to earn everything in a stage without having to return and a single path to the finish but features sluggish controls. Spyro Ripto's Rage has more refined controls, adds the ability to swim, multiple quests per level, and a more open world feel but the underwater sections can cause motion sickness. Spyro Year of the Dragon is the best one with near-perfect controls but due to the game's development focuses more on mini-games than playing as Spyro.

Each adventure features an outstanding story of Spyro showcasing his skills, saving the world, and learning new talents along the way. It's usually a simple tale but the colorful characters and funny writing makes them entertaining throughout. Insomniac Games' priority has always been to put fun above everything and even today Spyro's thrilling adventures still hold up today.

Much of Spyro's adventures include collecting hordes of colorful gems while taking over dozens of deadly enemies. Over time the challenges become greater and Spyro more powerful. Playing through the entire trilogy you can see how powerful Spyro has become over the course of his adventures and how much this young dragon evolves, even if he's a bit cocky.

Regardless of which game you choose each one is teeming with quality content. Each adventure, if you rush through, will take around 5-6 hours, but getting a perfect completion will add at least 2-3 hours to your adventure. More if you're an achievement/trophy hunter, with 3K worth of achievements on the Xbox One.

Toys for Bob have added some quality of life improvements such as the ability to exit stages from the menu, travel between stages, progression trackers, and quick access to the other Spyro titles. However, it would've been ideal if the developers improved Sparks collecting ability. Collecting gems remains a constant mechanic throughout the Spyro trilogy but with the exception of Spyro Year of the Dragon Sparks can easily miss gems right in front of him or if its centimeters away. This can lead to frustrating moments where the player is missing one gem, forcing them to travel throughout in search of it.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a collection of some of the best platformers ever made. Each one still holds up today and includes days worth of incredible adventures. The small problems that did rise up were minor at best since the outstanding gameplay overshadow most of them. If love platformers than the Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a must play!
