A charming life-sim experience defined by creativity and early-access growing pains.

You are entering into a life simulation experience that people have been discussing and anticipating for years before you even lay your hands on the game, but finally, it's here. Paralives comes with plenty of hype, largely because the genre it belongs to has long been dominated by one big name.

As soon as you boot up Paralives, it becomes apparent that it attempts to create a distinction for itself and not follow in the footsteps of those who came before it, despite natural comparisons being drawn when you play. The fact that Paralives comes from a very small indie studio means the game was developed over many years, with systems and concepts gradually revealed through development updates.

As soon as you step into the world of Paralives, everything seems to feel as though you have been shaping it according to the expectations that you had for the game all along.

You are not entering a completed product; rather, you are entering a product that is being made for you even as you play it, which is the concept behind early access games. Right from when you begin playing Paralives, you get right into the character creation aspect, and this is perhaps one of the best parts of the game.

You create Paras, and the degree of customization on offer lets you take your time, tweaking all sorts of things. There are sliders to tweak your character's physical attributes, including not just their facial structure and body proportions but even their height. Paralives features a color wheel system that gives you more control over your character's appearance.

Another way Paralives incorporates representation is by ensuring there are representation possibilities that seem inherent in the game, rather than an afterthought. For example, you can create a character with prosthetics, scars from top surgery, birthmarks, head coverings like hijabs or turbans, among other physical aspects of one’s identity.

In addition, gender is not based on body type, allowing for flexibility in the system. Personality creation moves away from a simple slot-based system of traits toward more complex ways of defining a personality, based around lifestyle and preferences. The game shifts to a life-sim framework at the start of gameplay, using familiar concepts while incorporating novel mechanics.

The needs for sleep, cleanliness, and eating are familiar concepts in this genre, but there is an innovative aspect to it based on personalities. Some Paras have additional needs due to their personality types, such as social energy and personal leisure time, bringing something different to the survival genre. Your success in fulfilling your needs affects skill progression.

The Paralives game includes cards that let the user choose conversation topics.

While chatting with different characters, the user fills a progress bar in the chat box, and afterward, they choose topics from cards, thereby changing the course of further communication. It is challenging to get used to such a method, especially if one wants full control over the storytelling process; however, it also makes communication patterns much more logical.

Gradually, the user becomes acquainted with the pattern of conversations that sometimes repeats itself. The second gameplay aspect in Paralives includes the storytellers. They change how the game runs behind the scenes by selecting the type of game you get. Some storytellers make the game easy, others make it balanced, and some make it difficult.

The storyteller will come up with prompts for you each day to play the game, and you will have the option of choosing whether to use them or not. Nevertheless, they will influence the way your family will develop in the game, thus adding some dynamism to the gameplay process. It gives you something to do when you have nothing else in mind.

In addition to the scripted elements in Paralives, some random occurrences affect gameplay in a somewhat reactive way. Events such as illnesses and fires affect how your Paras will react during gameplay by adjusting their priorities and other factors. There are instances when even survival-related needs are affected by context, adding an element of realism to characters' actions.

The most impressive aspect of Paralives is that personality shapes the game experience rather than merely serving as a descriptor.

Personality impacts not only the way your Para reacts but also affects his or her needs. For instance, if you have an introverted Para, that Para will need more solitude, while extroverted Paras might seek entertainment-oriented needs. Build mode is one of the most detailed modes in Paralives, spanning from planning to building.

In this mode, you can change wall sizes, place objects regardless of grid lines, and resize and adjust furniture to customize everything to your preferences and needs. The interface is intuitive after a few minutes, but what will really catch your eye is how many layers the menus have and how all the tools are grouped into categories.

In Paralives, you can customize your buildings in numerous ways, such as altering roof shapes, setting wall heights, and aligning them with the provided guidelines. Moreover, you can customize furniture according to your choice with the help of textures. Moving objects easily and resizing them are other aspects to consider in the game.

There are a couple of drawbacks associated with building in the game. Some elements, such as glitches, may disrupt the game's flow. It may be difficult to rotate whole lots, and the tools for working with terrain do not work as fast as one would expect.

Some stairs do not connect correctly to elevated floors, and certain wall and wallpaper options are harder to navigate. However, the inclusion of all these makes the construction process far from impossible; rather, they suggest that this game is still in its developmental stages.

During the game, players learn about the world their Paras live in.

Paralives has a semi-open world, where areas around households load in the background to prevent frequent gameplay pauses. Loading new households takes time, but this action speeds up each time a player switches to a particular household. Besides, Paralives offers several community areas, jobs, quests, and other activities.

Moreover, a quest system is implemented, displayed through boards and NPC interactions. You can undertake quests ranging from simple errands to minor challenges that can guide your gameplay session. In summary, the quests in this game have a preference for cozy simulations over sandbox chaos.

The performance is another factor that reveals Paralives' current status as an early-access game. It is quite possible to experience lag during gameplay and, in some instances, crashes depending on how loaded your system is. Restarting the game or your entire computer system becomes necessary if a crash occurs.

These factors do not occur all the time and vary between computers, yet they become apparent once encountered. Additionally, due to the risk of save corruption, autosaving is not available in this game. However, despite these problems, Paralives remains playable overall. One can spend many hours in this game without encountering any major problems, and even if they do happen, they rarely become game-stoppers.

While some actions may not be possible to execute in a certain way or may not work correctly, characters themselves could get stuck or behave unexpectedly from time to time.

However, the gameplay remains coherent as a whole. The roadmap for updates has already been outlined, with earlier patches focused on performance optimization and bug fixes ahead of larger content releases. The press reaction to Paralives seems to be rather coherent as well. The impressions of this simulation game from different sources are similar and cover many aspects, including character creation options and personality traits.

At the same time, while the game has positive aspects, almost all who have tried it say it is poorly developed and encounters problems in play. The characters' autonomy seems restricted; sometimes communication between them becomes tricky, and their performance deteriorates during open-world events.

Despite these flaws, Paralives is probably the most intriguing upcoming project in the genre, with a promising roadmap and a solid platform. This game definitely feels like an ongoing project rather than a full-fledged rival to the existing ones. From the Paralives roadmap, we learn that the game will be developed step-by-step. At the first stage, the developers will implement improvements to eliminate bugs and enhance gameplay.

Major updates are coming, including weather, swimming pools, a pet system, and other new mechanics. In general, Paralives is expected to have a 2-year Early Access period. The more that you play Paralives, the better an understanding you get of how it would fit into your own rotation.

While you would find this game better suited to brief playtimes focused on building and/or managing a household, it also allows you to explore the systems to their fullest. It is not quite there yet in terms of offering a consistent experience, but it certainly feels like something you would pick up when you need a simulation at a different pace.

Paralives is a game where you know exactly what the developers intended, even if the execution is still in progress.

In particular, the systems revolving around the characters and the building make for strong design intent, which also includes the significant flexibility offered by customization. Nevertheless, it would be a reminder that the performance is still an issue. It seems like Paralives is set up for a marathon rather than for reaching the finish line right away.

The reality is that the groundwork laid already provides a rich space for creativity and experimentation, though it still requires some polishing. It's safe to play it as a developing project; after all, you will have enough stable experience to appreciate all its elements and come back to the game with each new update. Another point where Paralives differentiates itself from other life sims is its approach to gameplay speed.

Unlike many games of this type, you are not forced to do things fast or simultaneously here. Paralives allows you to develop slow rhythms and build narratives about your Paras without getting into stressful situations. Even when things start happening in the game, you have some time to think and act rather than being thrown in the middle of an ongoing storm of events.

Another aspect that becomes increasingly apparent during gameplay in Paralives is the emphasis placed on the consistency of customization within systems. The consistent design approach seen throughout character creation carries over into building and simple actions. All colors, textures, and placement systems appear to be part of the same visual and mechanical system. The game's consistency keeps it together, even when some elements are unfinished or undeveloped.

Additionally, the purpose of the game is to develop it in a way that allows it to be easily modified by people outside the development team and to add their content. Even though Paralives has not yet been fully released, it will soon be clear that enough tools will be available to let people modify the game. The ability to expand Paralives' base elements through custom content is crucial given the genre's nature.

Despite its many shortcomings, Paralives manages to produce moments when all thoughts of development are cast aside, and one is merely playing the game for fun. These instances are typically generated by creating a simple character, observing one's Paras in everyday activities, or engaging in personality-based interactions. It is during these calmer parts of gameplay that Paralives is the closest to achieving its purpose.

Verdict

Paralives is an absolutely thrilling early-access life simulation game that oozes creativity and depth despite ongoing stability issues. Despite its flaws, it creates moments when one plays for fun rather than development.
