The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief - Chapter 3: A Murder of Ravens

Beyond the seemingly simple puzzles and gameplay behind chapter three, A Murder of Ravens still offers a solid conclusion to the mysteries that have built up throughout the series.

In chapter one of The Raven: Legacy of a Master Thief, players find themselves on a train traveling through the Swiss Alps. Aboard are a multitude of characters, all under suspicion of being the master thief - The Raven. Through chapter one and two, the point-and-click adventure game follows the games protagonist, Constable Anton Jakob Zellner, as he investigates the mystery behind a missing jewel, and the even bigger mystery of who stole the precious jewel. In chapter two players switch roles, seeing previous events through the eyes of a thief, and revealing more about the mysterious Raven. Chapter Two leaves players hanging, concerned about the fate of Constable Zellner, and more so excited for the final chapter, A Murder of Ravens.

This time around, Chapter three nearly leaves Constable Zellner out of the picture. Instead, players take on the roles of the stowaway, Adil, and the American woman, Patricia Mayers. This change of roles reveals yet another perspective on the disappearance of the beloved jewel, and builds upon the characters, along with the storyline. As the story unfolds many characters' true natures are exposed; good and bad.

As with each prior chapter, A Murder of Ravens dives deeper into the mystery behind the Raven, and the theft of the precious ruby, The Eye of the Sphinx. Both previous chapters' settings were centered around a ship called the MS Lydia, and a museum in Cairo. Disappointingly, A Murder of Ravens, focuses on these same settings, mainly on the MS Lydia. This makes for a more in depth look into the characters' backgrounds, but becomes monotonous, as the ship is explored in excess with each consecutive chapter.

Chapter three's gameplay elements remain the same, and nothing changes with the artistic stylings of the series. However, more glitches are prevalent in chapter three than any of the previous chapters. Moving a character should easily be accomplished with the click of the mouse, but often that character refuses to move, remaining stationary, walking back and forth, or spinning in circles. These are all major setbacks in comparison with the previous chapters' very minor glitches.

A Murder of Ravens is much quicker paced, and seems to end prematurely, taking approximately one hour to complete. Previous chapters had numerous puzzles, and more difficult puzzles, resulting in a more in-depth experience. Puzzles in the game's conclusive chapter are few and far between, and much too simple.

Beyond the seemingly simple puzzles and gameplay behind chapter three, A Murder of Ravens still offers a solid conclusion to the mysteries that have built up throughout the series. Who stole The Eye of the Sphinx? Who is the Raven? All questions that are answered with the finale of the game, making the overall experience one to remember.
