A concise breakdown of ten build ideas using the new tomes from the Archon Prophecy DLC.

Game Guide by Ornstein on  Aug 24, 2025

Welcome to this guide: it collects 10 distinct build concepts that can be tested with the new tomes introduced in the Archon Prophecy DLC. Each section explains how a tome or mechanic pairs with cultural or unit choices and what to prioritize when planning a build.

Introduction to using the new tomes

The Archon Prophecy DLC adds several tomes that change core strategies; this guide focuses on practical synergies and clear combos rather than exhaustive mechanical breakdowns.

Each entry highlights which units, traits, spells, and province choices naturally complement the tome in question so that you can quickly form a cohesive strategy and test it on the map.

Virtue & Tanky Builds

The Virtue term pairs very well with tanky approaches: for one, Paladin is a superb shield unit with intense healing, durability, and respectable damage output.

Combine Paladin with Virtue Spirit, which keeps units hitting effectively regardless of their current HP, and add Heroic Stand to restore status and keep frontline units performing.

With those tools, your units become difficult to kill while remaining offensively relevant. This combo should work exceptionally well with Industrious and similar cultures; recommended province picks include Feudal and Industrious for maximum synergy.

Virtue & Swarmer Builds

Using Virtue for a swarm-focused strategy is also viable: Virtue Spirit and Heroic Stand allow low-tier units to remain effective and resilient for extended fights.

Heroic Stand is inexpensive and doubles as a status cleanser, which amplifies the staying power of swarms.

Leader units such as Paladin and Vigil provide reliable fronts for the swarm, and interaction with the Tome of Horde and Barbarian culture enhances mass-unit tactics.

The Virtue tome can be played two ways—tank or swarm—so focus on economy and reinforcement choices that support high unit counts.

Prophecies & Defensive Mode

The Tome of Prophecies introduces unusual defensive options. Precognition, available through certain enchantments, can negate the next damaging ability or spell that would hit a unit, creating strong nuke protection.

Defensive Masters forces units into defense mode at the end of their turn, which pairs exceptionally well with Precognition. This defensive mechanic appears in Industrious and other sources and is particularly potent with Golem-style builds.

Overall, Precognition gives a powerful shield to defensive strategies with minimal downside, making the Prophecies tome a strong choice for protective playstyles.

Prophecies & Ranged Builds In General

The Prophecies tome is well-suited to ranged builds: Fated Projectiles increases critical strike chance and synergizes with order bonuses like Faithful, while Battle Divination and Precognition improve survivability through evasion and defensive mode.

Oracles provide True Strike, preventing misses and boosting reliability for archers and battle mages. Combine these effects with Tome of Exaltation and the Shrine of Smiting when using faith-based bonuses to empower ranged units further. If ranged or mage tactics appeal to you, Prophecies provides many supportive tools.

Revenant & Necromancy (Duh)

The Tome of the Revenant (a necromancy tome) is a significant boon for undead-centric strategies: Undead Resentment grants substantial bonuses to undead forces, including mitigation of weaknesses against spirit and fire, plus additional enemy demoralization on kills.

Buildings such as the Necropolis enable draftable undead up to Titans, and interactions with Revenant Whispers and Chamber of the Right open regenerative and reinforcement options.

Fallen Angels, while not undead, synergize well with these effects by debuffing and dominating enemies rather than simply killing them. This tome reintroduces fresh necromancy flavors to explore.

Archon & Tanky / Summoning

The Tome of the Archon fits tanky and summoning builds. Ascended Rebirth rebirths a unit into a more durable form and can produce a tier-three battle mage; Pure Soul removes negative statuses and grants positive counterparts once per turn.

Holy Aura delivers retributive damage around units at the end of the turn and boosts status resistance. Celestial Guardians summon tier-three Archon units, Astra is a tier-five angel, and Archon Gate can recruit or summon high-tier Titans—all excellent for both tanking and high-tier order summons. These mechanics make the Archon tome versatile between summoning and defensive roles.

Revenant & Undead Morale Destruction

A necromancy variation emphasizes demoralization: units or spells that increase enemy Morale damage—such as Vicious Killer and Armor of Despair—stack with Undead Resentment to exploit low-morale enemies.

Fallen Angels further amplify morale-focused tactics by degrading enemy resolve. Map spells and battle summons that lower morale give huge benefits, and this strategy works well with undead units that get bonuses based on their morale. If lowering confidence is a big part of the build, the Tome of the Revenant is the best item to use.

Archon & Swarming

The Tome of the Archon also supports swarm strategies: Ascended Rebirth converts disposable low-tier units into potent battle mages or otherwise functional units, while Celestial Guardians supply tier-three backups during battles.

Because Pure Soul reduces adverse effects and grants positive ones, low-tier swarms become stingier to debuff and more effective in prolonged fights.

The Archon Gate province feature increases strategic mobility through teleportation, enabling rapid redeployment of small armies.

Combine these elements to create highly mobile, resilient swarm armies supported by mid- and high-tier summons such as Astra and Titans.

Virtue & Dragons

Virtue pairs surprisingly well with dragon synergies: Draconic Rage and Virtue Spirit both activate around similar HP thresholds (often triggered at 60% HP), creating a powerful overlap where units gain both draconic and virtuous bonuses.

Draconic Transformation can grant the trait to many units, enabling broad application of this interaction. Use Virtue on forces that can reliably survive to the trigger point—this can be combined with tank or swarm choices to create explosive mid-fight power spikes.

Prophecies & Mage-Centric Builds

Finally, Prophecies can excel with mage-centric and battle mage cultures: Temple of the Prophet and conduit-based province improvements scale well with a heavy conduit count, which rewards mystic and magic cultures.

Oracles and supportive council spells reduce vulnerability to nukes while enabling fragile frontlines to remain viable through Precognition and healing.

The tome protects against magical and physical nukes, so it enhances the survivability of brittle but powerful magical forces. Overall, Prophecies is strongest when paired with culture and province choices that emphasize conduits and battle mages.

Closing notes on experimentation

These ten concepts represent practical starting points: each build idea relies on distinct tome mechanics and cultural or unit synergies.

Test province choices and unit recruitment to fit the selected tome, prioritize the spells and buildings that unlock the key mechanics mentioned above, and adapt as needed when an opponent counters your primary tactic.
