ANNO: Mutationem Guide | How To Defeat Mother Grub
A guide on how to defeat Mother Grub in ANNO: Mutationem.
Game Guide by Rubaiyat Shihab on Dec 20, 2025
You face Mother Grub pretty early in the game, and she is meant to show you how to deal with big fights that have more than one part. She uses strikes that are slow but deadly, as well as steady pressure through called monsters.
She is not meant to be scary, but she is very harsh on mistakes. You face her two times, and each time you learn more. Both fights become easier to handle if you know her habits and stay in control of the area.

Mother Grub Attacks
Mother Grub has several attacks, but most of them are clearly telegraphed. Once you learn what to look for, avoiding damage becomes consistent.
Summon Grub
Throughout the fight, Mother Grub summons smaller Grubs to assist her. During the first encounter, these enemies target the generators. You need to remove them regularly to prevent unnecessary pressure while still damaging the boss whenever possible.
Nudge Attack
This is her simplest move. She pulls herself in and pushes forward toward you. The timing is slow, making it easy to parry or roll through without much effort.
Rolling Attack
She rolls in a ball across the field. You can stop this attack, and it's simple to get the timing correct. The larger camera makes it simpler to become used to this action in the second encounter.
Slam Attack
For a time, Mother Grub seems like a giant hand as she raises herself up and then crashes down. You have time to answer since the wind-up is lengthy. Rolling behind her is safer than parrying since she remains in the action and takes harm for free.
Bouncing Attack
She jumps into the air and lands directly where you are standing. You can parry this attack, but rolling to where she jumped from avoids it every time.

Consume
This move appears when her health is very low. She opens her mouth and slams down in an attempt to swallow you. If it connects, you take heavy damage. Roll past her as soon as you see the wind-up.
Poison Cloud
This attack only appears in the second encounter. Mother Grub fires three poison projectiles that turn into lingering gas clouds. If you hit the projectiles midair, the clouds form wherever they are struck. Shooting them high keeps the arena clear.
Rolling Ground Pound
This move, which is only seen in the second fight, mixes rolling and hitting. She rolls up a wall, takes off, and falls down on the other side. Run to the wall she rolled up to so she wouldn't get hit. It's possible to block the slam, but the time gets less reliable later on when she slows down her fall.
First Mother Grub Boss Battle
Your main goal during this fight is to keep the generators clear while damaging Mother Grub whenever you can. The Greatsword works well here because its wide swings let you hit multiple Grubs and the boss at the same time.
Early in the fight, she relies mostly on her nudge and slam attacks. Both are slow and leave her exposed. Roll behind her during these moves and attack while she recovers.
When Mother Grub opens her mouth, you can throw a Grenade directly inside for free damage. This is one of the most effective moments to use them, though they are not required.
Once her health drops below half, she begins jumping and rolling more often. Her rolling attack sends her across the arena, giving you space to clear any Grubs gathering near the generators.
Near defeat, she starts using her consume attack. The wind-up is obvious, so roll past her and punish her recovery.
Tips For The First Encounter
The generators can take some damage, so you do not need to panic as long as you remove Grubs regularly.
Her back is often exposed. Attacking from behind with the Greatsword clears smaller enemies while damaging her.
Use Grenades when her mouth is open, but do not rely on them.

Second Mother Grub Boss Battle
The second encounter starts differently. Mother Grub starts the battle in the air and shoots poison missiles all across the arena. Your first goal is to fire the projectile in the middle before it hits the ground, which keeps the middle of the arena usable.
There are few Grubs on the ground, although they aren't very dangerous. When you inflict enough damage to breach her shield, she crashes down, and the combat goes back to how it was before.
On the ground, she behaves similarly to the first encounter, but with increased speed. Her new rolling ground pound attack is easy to avoid if you move toward the wall she used to launch herself.
After taking enough damage, she returns to the air and repeats the poison phase. Handle it the same way as before by shooting the projectiles early.
In the final phase, she stays grounded and spends more time rolling across the arena. The camera pulls back, making parries easier. Stand your ground and parry each roll to end the fight quickly.
Tips For The Second Encounter
In the latter phase, parrying works quite well and makes the battle much shorter. Be careful where toxic clouds grow, for they stay where they are hit. Don't attack till they are gone.
When Mother Grub flies low, jump and hit her with the Greatsword, then slam down to damage nearby Grubs at the same time.
