Chum is a versatile Lancer in FragPunk who utilizes a unique pet-based ability system combined with explosive and smoke deployment tools. This character offers multiple tactical options through different bait types and deployment methods.

Understanding how to use Chum's adaptive abilities will give you flexible options for both offensive and defensive situations.

Biting Fish

Your signature ability deploys a fish that actively seeks out enemies and bites them. In its basic form, the fish deals minimal damage but provides scouting and harassment potential. You can throw the fish into sites or areas to locate enemies and apply pressure, even if the damage output is limited.

The fish becomes significantly more versatile when combined with different bait types. You can feed it smoke bait, transforming it into a mobile smoke deployment tool. When equipped with smoke bait, the fish creates smoke walls as it travels, and you can control the direction by aiming where you want the smoke path to go.

Alternatively, you can feed the fish explosive bait, which increases its damage output when it reaches targets. While still not dealing massive damage, the explosive version provides more meaningful harassment and can soften enemies for follow-up attacks.

The fish's ability to seek targets automatically makes it useful for checking corners and applying pressure to hidden enemies.

Explosive Trap

Your second ability creates an explosive trap that deals the same amount of damage as your fish when equipped with explosive bait. This trap requires line of sight to be most effective, so positioning becomes crucial for maximizing its impact.

The explosive trap works well for area denial and punishing enemy movement through predictable paths. You can place it around corners, near objectives, or in choke points where enemies are likely to pass. The damage output matches your explosive fish, providing consistent damage potential across your abilities.

Strategic placement allows you to control map areas and force enemies to take alternative routes or risk taking damage. The trap's line of sight requirement means you need to consider angles and positioning when deploying it for maximum effectiveness.

Versatile Smoke Ball

Your third ability offers flexible smoke deployment with two distinct activation modes. You can set the smoke to explode on contact, creating immediate smoke coverage as soon as it touches any surface. Alternatively, you can set it to explode on land, allowing you to bounce it around corners before it activates.

The bounce mechanic gives you creative options for smoke placement in areas you cannot directly access. You can bank the smoke off walls to create coverage behind corners or in elevated positions. Once activated, the smoke creates a large ball that completely blocks sight lines in its area.

The smoke ball provides more concentrated coverage than linear smoke walls, making it effective for blocking specific angles or creating dense cover areas. You cannot see through this smoke, so timing and placement are crucial for supporting team movements or covering rotations.
