During a fight, you can pull up a special screen to see exactly what is happening. If you are using a controller, just hit the Right Trigger to open it.

This screen shows you which enemy is targeting which teammate so you can plan ahead. It also lists every Buff, Debuff, and Ailment currently affecting anyone on the field. If you look at the details section, the game gives you even more info on how these effects are working.

Elements and Resistances

Damage comes in six different types in this game. You have Fire, Water, Thunder, Ice, Dragon, and Non-Element. Even though it sounds like it doesn't have a type, Non-Element works just like the others. Every Weapon, Armor, and Monster is tied to these elements.

Each enemy has specific things they are good or bad against in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection. For example, one Monster might shrug off Non-Element attacks but take huge damage from Ice.

Using the wrong element won't always make you lose, but it makes the fight much harder. If you get stuck, try checking the Monsterpedia. It tracks the elemental weaknesses of every creature you have fought.

In the heat of battle, these weaknesses start as question marks on your status screen, but they fill in once you hit the enemy with that damage type for the first time.

The Power of Status Ailments

Inflicting statuses on enemies is one of the strongest ways to win. Many elements are linked to specific problems: Fire can cause Burn for damage over time, and Thunder can cause Paralysis, which might make an enemy skip their turn.

Poison is especially useful because it does damage based on how much health the enemy has. It doesn't matter if you are at a much lower level than your opponent; Poison will still drain their life just as fast.

This makes it a great trick for winning the toughest fights in the game if you can stay alive long enough for it to work in Monster Hunter Stories 3: Twisted Reflection.

Some creatures have a skill called Fruit Frenzy. This move can hit an enemy with Paralysis, Poison, and Darkness all at once. Darkness makes the enemy miss their attacks more often.

When you combine these, you are dealing extra damage while making it much harder for the enemy to actually hit you back.
