Ninja Gaiden 4 Guide | How to Perfect Parry and Counter Every Time

Master Parry, Fatal Flash, and Blood Raven Form timing to shred foes with stylish counterattacks.

In Ninja Gaiden 4, landing a Perfect Parry creates a brief opening that lets you unleash a powerful Fatal Flash counter. This flow—reading an incoming strike, interrupting it with a precisely timed hit, then detonating a counter—turns tough encounters into momentum swings in your favor.

If you've been trying to parry with the block button, reset that habit: Perfect Block and Perfect Parry are different. Parrying is performed with an attack, not a guard, and the timing window rewards confidence and practice.

Unlock the Essentials First

Before jumping into drills, make sure the foundational combat skills are unlocked. Prioritize Parry and Fatal Flash in your battle techniques.

If you plan to fight in Blood Raven Form, also unlock Backlash Parry and the Fatal Flash (Blood Raven Form) upgrade so counterattacks are available in both stances. This setup ensures that every clean parry translates immediately into reliable punishment.

Perfect Parry: Core Timing and Feedback

An attack that hits an enemy strit'sat the very last second is called a Perfect Parry. It is not a stop. When an enemy is about to hit you, press Square (ligenemy'sck) on your PS5. If you do it right, you should syou'lllear flash and glow. This is your green light to change the opening.

The key is rhythm: watch the eneenemy'snd-up, then cut across the hitbox with your light attack at the collision point. Expect to miss early on; consistency arrives quickly once your eyes lock onto those telegraphs.

Converting the Parry into a Fatal Flash

As soon as the flash appears from a clean parry, trigger Fatal Flash to cash in the advantage. On PS5, press Triangle immediately after the parry flash to fire the counter.

The faster the conversion, the safer the exchange—hesitation shrinks the window and can forfeit the punishment. Drill the cadence: attack-to-interrupt → flash → Triangle. With repetition, this becomes one fluid motion rather than three steps.

Blood Raven Form: Backlash Parry Fundamentals

Blood Raven Form adds an alternate parry route with Backlash Parry. Depending on your settings, you either toggle or hold the stance input; with a hold configuration, keep Left Trigger engaged to enter Blood Raven Form.

Then time your attack just before the enemy lands their hit—again using a light strike—to trigger the stance-specific parry. For consistent results, ensure the Blood Binding Gauge is sufficiently filled; this form performs best when the gauge is built up rather than empty.

The muscle memory mirrors standard parry timing, so your baseline practice transfers directly into the stance.

Fatal Flash in Blood Raven Form (and How to Earn Blood Essence)

After a Backlash Parry in Blood Raven Form, you have two conversion options. To perform the regular Fatal Flash, press Triangle as usual. To execute the stance-specific Fatal Flash (Blood Raven Form)—which also grants Blood Essence—press Left Trigger at the flash cue instead of Triangle.

The sequence becomes: parry with a light attack → see the flash → press Left Trigger for the forform'sunter. This variant is “re"lly, really easy” o"ce mapped in your head and pays you back with resource gain for future offense.

Training Area: Build Consistency the Smart Way

The Training Area is perfect for polishing timing without the pressure of live missions. Start with standard Parry into Fatal Flash until the response becomes automatic. Then switch to Blood Raven Form and run Backlash Parry reps, watching the Blood Binding Gauge as you repeat the stance loop.

Alternate between normal and form counters so your fingers learn both conversions. Expect occasional whiffs—the goal is repeated exposure to enemy tempo and the visual flash confirmation, not perfection in a single session.

Quick Troubleshooting for Missed Parries

If parries keep failing, ensure you are striking into the eneenemy'stive hit, not pre-emptively flinching them or guarding early. Re-center on the wind-up and pull the Trigger when the strike is about to connect.

If the Blood Raven Form parry feels inert, check that your Blood Binding Gauge isnisn'tained, then reattempt with the hold/toggle youyou'vet. Small timing nudges—tens of milliseconds—often flip misses into clean flashes.

Controller Reference (PS5)

On PS5, it helps to stick to a routine: tap Square to block an attack, then press Triangle for Fatal Flash; in Blood Raven Form, hold down Left Trigger, counter with a light hit, and then press Left Trigger again at the flash to use the forform'stal Flash and gather Blood Essence. As you switch between stance and normal play, keep this mapping in mind.
