No Rest for the Wicked continuously tests your combat execution and survival instincts with its highly atmospheric and punishing world design. After your tough battles through the thick undergrowth of the Marin Woods, the overall storyline rises to a full-scale ideological conflict. This pivotal turning point kicks off the main story chapter, known island-wide on Sacra as Faith and Flame.

To officially begin this great endeavor, you must return to the heights of the Rookery tower in the heart of the capital city of Sacrament. Climb the twisting stone stairs for a vital narrative conversation with your trusted allies, Roan and the Watcher. The Watcher will give your vanguard a serious, timely warning about the reckless movements of Madrigal Seline.
She has led her fanatical Inquisition forces straight toward the ancient Mountain Gate, with the intention of tearing it open at all costs. You are to follow her expedition, immediately, to avert a catastrophic breach that could release ancient horrors upon the world. When the dramatic briefing cutscene is over, open up your map interface and make sure your inventory hotbars are set up perfectly for a long volcanic campaign.
Travel to the Nameless Pass
Your primary path takes you out of the northern edges of Sacrament and back toward the jagged cliffs of the Nameless Pass. Near the massive stone bridge linking the capital to the outer wilderness, you will meet a tired scout named Orvyn. Have a chat with him to get an analytical brief on the strict military lockdown currently in place ahead.
Orvyn warns you that the approach to the mountain is well guarded by the elite legions of the royal army. Cross the series of broken wooden bridges past his position carefully, watching for hidden resource gathering spots along the rocky chasms. Soon you will see a disciplined line of heavily-armored Bolein Knights patrolling the main dirt pathways leading upward.
Follow the trail of soldiers until you reach two high level guards standing by a massive iron gate that completely blocks your progress. But don't try to take these impenetrable defenders head-on. Look straight to your right and you'll see a wooden ladder attached to the scaffold. Climb the rungs to an elevated wooden platform that overlooks the region where the regional military commander is situated.
Meeting Primus Bainbridge
This imposing figure is Primus Bainbridge, and talking to him is mandatory to progress your campaign. Bainbridge tells your character that, by order of the crown, all outsiders are strictly forbidden to reach the upper Mountain Gate. He offers a compromise: if you help him kill a faction of dangerous military deserters to the west, he will grant you full passage.
Go to the western cliff face and drop down from the commander's platform to find these rogue combatants. Walk your character slowly and carefully along a narrow wooden beam, set beneath a fast-flowing waterfall. At the end of the beam, use your heavy melee weapons to smash a wall of loose stone rubble to find a hidden cavern.
Exploring this damp cave system will reveal and allow you to immediately activate a vital blue Whisper checkpoint terminal. This terminal is your safety net and it means that you won’t lose a lot of exploration progress if you fall in battle. Above the glowing terminal, look for a series of rocky ledges that you can climb systematically.
The Hunt for the Bolein Runaways
Your vanguard goes up these sheer ledges and right into the main hide-out of the Bolein deserters. These renegade knights travel in tight formations and employ devastating shield bashes and heavy spear lunges. It is very useful to draw individual targets away from the central campfire and to kill them off one at a time without getting surrounded.
Kill all deserters in the cavern and take the Bolein Knight Insignia from their bodies. This special quest item is your irrefutable proof of deed for the military command personnel. Before you exit the cave loot the big treasure chest to the left on the campfire for a Simple Torch and some extra gold.
Return across the beam over the waterfall and back to the high scaffolding to talk to Primus Bainbridge again. The commander sees the proof of the insignia, honors your agreement and works a nearby lever. He gets on a mechanical lift that raises him to the upper tier, and a second lift platform drops to your level.
The Judgment of Speaker Lucian
Get on the wooden platform and take the elevator up to a brand new, vertically enhanced area of the Nameless Pass. As you walk off the lift, a shocking narrative cutscene will start up straight away in front of you. You’ll witness a tense standoff between Primus Bainbridge and a hard-nosed religious authority called Speaker Lucian.
Speaker Lucian condemns the act of the commander as heresy and passes a savage sentence, throwing him into a gaping pit of fire. And so your character is left at the edge of a vast roaring chasm, filled with churning volcanic magma. You need to formulate a tactical approach to safely traverse this burning pit if you are to pursue Madrigal Seline further.

Just to the left of the platform is a bunch of wooden boxes, which you must jump over quickly. Cross the broken stone bridge and continue walking to a remote cave alcove with a new Whisper terminal. Hit this checkpoint and leave the small cave. Climb the tall wooden ladder on the left to enter the main lava field gauntlet.
Walking Through the Hazardous Burning Pit
The environment in this volcanic zone is extremely hostile, with active lava pits spraying molten rock violently every few seconds. The vents cool down for a brief moment, and you can sprint past them. You must carefully observe the timing of the eruption of these hazards. Leap carefully across a deep volcanic fissure and land safely on the stone platform opposite.
Climb the stone stairs and immediately kick down a wooden ladder, creating a permanent shortcut route back to the previous bridge. Climb the stairs again, move to the right side of the terrace and pull a heavy iron lever mechanism. This causes a large stone boulder to be released and it begins to roll slowly down into the fiery abyss below.
Quickly jump on top of this rolling boulder and ride it down into the lower sections of the burning pit. You must be fully focused on this descent, because that boulder will eventually go right into the deadly lake of magma. Jump from the rock on a nearby wooden ledge exactly and at the right time, before it is completely submerged.
Scaling the Walls of the Volcanic Vine
Under your weight the wooden structure will begin to splinter and you'll run immediately to the stable stone end of the path. Follow the narrow ledge around the upper rim of the pit, keeping a sharp lookout for falling masonry and sudden geysers of lava. Head for the far side of the chasm, deliberately ignoring the large vine wall hanging below you for now.
Find a ladder nearby and climb up to find a heavy iron security gate. Open it and make another vital shortcut. If you have a fishing rod equipped, there is a glowing pond to the left of Speaker Lucian where you can briefly harvest rare resources. Back to the wooden beams over the abyss and down to the thick green vines that hang against the hot rock face.
Leap over the successive walls of vine with exactness, hurrying with the utmost speed to avoid the columns of flame shooting upward. When you reach the top landing, look to your right to find a valuable treasure chest full of gold, Saltstone, and Flax Threads. Go past the nearby campfire and cross the stone bridge to your right. Find the last mountain staircase.
The Way to the Gate of the Mountain
If you ascend the first landing of these grand stairs you can break a weak wooden wall near some boulders to find a hidden mining cave. Climb the next massive flight of stone steps to the absolute summit of the Nameless Pass. A peaceful campfire on the right, and a final Whisper checkpoint terminal on the left, at this high-altitude apex.
Stop and rest up at this terminal. Use the ingredients you’ve collected to cook up your best meals to restore health and focus. Just make sure your main melee weapons are fully repaired and your runic skills are assigned to hotkeys that are easy to reach. When you have completely finished your preparations for combat, go through the great stone archways and enter the courtyard of the Mountain Gate.
A dramatic cinematic sequence will automatically play, revealing that your arrival has unfortunately come far too late. Already, Madrigal Seline and her zealous Inquisition forces have forcibly torn the monumental seal apart. Instead of bringing forth holy salvation, their reckless behaviour has released a terrifying swarm of demonic entities upon the island.
Winged Brood Boss Fight – Phase One
The sky darkens immediately and the massive, multi-tiered boss encounter against the dreaded Winged Brood officially begins. In the first phase of this vicious battle, you will have to fend off a swarm of tiny flying vermin. These fast-moving creatures will dive-bomb and claw-slash you in quick succession, constantly interrupting your action animations.
Keep a highly mobile defense, with wide horizontal sweeps of weapons to knock them out of the air as they land. Don’t waste your stamina meter on these minor threats, you need to save your energy for the horrors to come. Once the smaller bird things are dead a huge mutated horror called the Bile Wretch will come crashing in to start stage two.
The Bile Wretch uses slow, devastating ground slams and gross streams of corrosive projectile vomit. Your character will quickly be inflicted with a hefty damage-over-time status effect if you stand in its pools of toxic sludge. Execute precise dodge rolls directly beneath its extended arms to get your vanguard safely behind its exposed, vulnerable flank.
Winged Brood Boss Fight - Phase Two
Next, take your strongest focus-consuming runic arts and stagger the beast hard, then squeeze as much damage into the tiny windows of recovery as you can. After killing the Bile Wretch, the last and most terrifying stage of the boss gauntlet begins with the arrival of the Blood Wraith. The final being is blindingly fast, with high-velocity aerial lunges and tracking energy waves.

The Blood Wraith will take out your entire health bar in 2 consecutive hits if you are not careful and try to block its attacks. You have to learn to be patient and to wait until it comes down from the air when it is so aggressive and then you hit it. Be disciplined with your defensive loops and pop your saved health potions when your vitality gets into the critical zone until the titan finally falls.
Beating this final nightmare earns your peerless heroism a vast hoard of legendary loot and premium crafting materials. Walk through the smoking wreckage of the arena to find the city of Caylen, the historic holy city, completely in ruins. There are no traces of Madrigal Seline left, and your best bet is to make it back to civilization and report the tragic end.
The Aftermath and Return to Sacrament
Fast travel straight back to the safety of Sacrament and climb the stone stairs to the raised Rookery tower. Break the bad news to Roan and the Watcher, to their faces, about the Mountain Gate and the destruction of Caylen. The events that have transpired will sorely grieve the Watcher, and bring the epic Faith and Flame questline to an official end.
