AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT vs. NVIDIA RTX 4070: Gaming, Ray Tracing & Value Compared
Comprehensive test results showcasing strengths and weaknesses of RX 7800 XT and RTX 4070 in modern gaming titles.
Hardware by Nakiro on Aug 16, 2025
The Radeon RX 7800 XT and GeForce RTX 4070 are two high-performance GPUs targeting gamers who want great value without sacrificing modern features. Both cards were tested extensively across 45 games at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions, with and without ray tracing.
CPU used was Ryzen 7 7800X3D paired with 32GB DDR5-6000CL30 memory. All results are based on updated testing data for accuracy.

Gaming Performance
Starfield
Starfield, title known for poor performance on GeForce GPUs, gave 7800 XT a significant win. At 1080p, it was 22% faster, 23% faster at 1440p, and 24% faster at 4K.
Baldur’s Gate 3
Sponsored by Nvidia but running well on AMD hardware, Baldur’s Gate 3 showed similar performance at 1080p and 1440p, with the 7800 XT pulling ahead by 8% at 4K.
Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
RTX 4070 led here with 13-15% greater performance, especially noticeable at 4K, where it moved from 49 fps to 56 fps.
Cyberpunk 2077
Without ray tracing, 7800 XT was 9% faster at 1080p, 16% faster at 1440p, and 22% faster at 4K. With ray tracing enabled, RTX 4070 dominated, delivering 57% higher performance at 1080p.

The Callisto Protocol
Performance was close, with 7800 XT ahead by just 4% at 1080p/1440p and 5% at 4K. Ray tracing performance remained competitive, with a big 19% win for the 7800 XT at 4K.
Fortnite
In DirectX 11 mode, RTX 4070 was 26% faster at 1080p and 15% faster at 1440p. At 4K, 7800 XT edged ahead by 3%. With ray tracing (DX12), 7800 XT performed better, winning by 11% at 1080p and 9% at 1440p.
Resident Evil 4
Both GPUs exceeded 170fps at 1080p. The 7800 XT was 6% faster at 1440p and 12% faster at 4K. With ray tracing, it held a 6% lead at 1440p and 16% at 4K.
Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
Performance was nearly identical, with the RTX 4070 being just 4% faster at 1080p and a tie at 1440p and 4K. Ray tracing performance was also very similar.
Hogwarts Legacy
7800 XT was 20% faster at 1080p, 28% faster at 1440p, and 18% faster at 4K without ray tracing. With ray tracing, the RTX 4070 was 21% faster at 1440p, but struggled at 4K due to VRAM limits.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor
Without ray tracing, 7800 XT was 15% faster at 1080p, 14% faster at 1440p, and tied at 4K. With ray tracing, RTX 4070 led at 1080p (+9%) and 1440p (+6%).
1080p Performance
Across all mixed tests, 7800 XT was 3% faster on average. Removing ray tracing improved this to 5% faster. In ray tracing-only results, 4070 held the advantage in Cyberpunk 2077, but otherwise, the 7800 XT remained competitive.
1440p Performance
In mixed results, 7800 XT averaged 5% faster performance. Without ray tracing, the lead grew to 7%. Ray tracing performance remained competitive, though 7800 XT struggled in Cyberpunk 2077, Hogwarts Legacy, and a few others.
4K Performance
7800 XT saw its biggest margin here, 8% faster overall in mixed results. Removing ray tracing kept the lead at 8%. In ray tracing tests, frame rates were generally too low to matter, though RTX 4070 still led in Cyberpunk 2077.

Final Thoughts
According to our testing, the two GPUs perform roughly equally overall. In rasterization jobs, 7800 XT usually wins, but the RTX 4070 is the best at ray tracing. 4070 also supports DLSS and frame generation, which can greatly improve performance in some games. It also consumes less power; for equal performance, it typically needs about 50W less.
mance. On the other hand, 7800 XT has 4GB more VRAM (16GB total), better rasterization performance, and a lower US MSRP—$500 compared to RTX 4070’s $600. That $100 difference (17% lower) makes t7800 XT the obvious choice in the US if you’re looking for maximum value and don’t specifically need Nvidia-exclusive features.
While we recommend 7800 XT for most US buyers, we strongly advise you to research performance in the games you play most, as the winner can vary significantly from title to title.
If you need the best ray tracing performance, DLSS 3, or slightly better power efficiency, RTX 4070 is worth considering. If you prioritize rasterization, VRAM capacity, and value, 7800 XT is hard to beat.
