A guide on how to unlock Genzui Kusaka as an Ally in Rise of the Rōnin.
Game Guide by Groot on Aug 13, 2025
Genzui Kusaka in Rise of the Rōnin requires you to prove your combat skills through confrontation before he will join your cause. His recruitment involves a combat trial that tests your weapon proficiency and martial abilities.

This ally specializes in paired sword combat and offers benefits that enhance your ki management during battles.
How to Unlock Genzui Kusaka
You have to finish "The Way of the Warrior," Genzui Kusaka's first bond task, before you can make him your friend. You can do this job after you finish the "Follow Your Blade Twin" ronin task, which is part of the main story.
The key requirement for this mission is that you must fight Kusaka using the same weapon type he uses during the encounter.

He fights with paired swords, so you need to equip paired swords before engaging in combat with him.
This weapon requirement tests your proficiency with the paired sword combat system and demonstrates your martial skills.
You have to beat Kusaka in the battle trial by using paired sword moves and plans. The fight is both an audition for new members and a lesson in how to fight with a partner's sword.

Being able to beat him with paired swords shows that you are worthy and makes him want to join your cause.
Once you complete the combat encounter and finish all objectives within "The Way of the Warrior" mission, Kusaka will become available as a permanent ally for future missions.
Combat Abilities and Equipment
Genzui Kusaka only fights with matched swords and doesn't have any other weapons. His fighting style is based on the special moves and ways of attacking that paired sword users can use.
Because he has specialized, he is good at certain types of fighting where paired sword skills are useful.

His gift skill is called "Grassroots," and it lowers the amount of ki needed for material skills. This gift helps a lot during long battles where controlling your ki is important.
You can use your material skills more often without running out of ki as fast because they use less of it.
Bond Level Rewards and Combat Training
When your bond with Genzui Kusaka reaches its highest level, he will teach you how to fight with two swords. He teaches the Naito Ichi Ryu style of fighting with a paired sword.
This style is part of the Te skill tree. This style of fighting includes new attack combos and moves made just for fighting with a partner and a sword.

The Naito Ichi Ryu style has many different attacking and defense moves that are based on the unique qualities of the paired sword weapon.
These methods let you quickly launch attacks and make defensive moves that you can't do with other kinds of weapons.
Kusaka gives you two strength skill points when your bond level is at its highest. These skill points can be put into the strength skill tree to unlock powers that boost physical damage, make it easier to handle weapons, and improve other physical fighting skills.
Kusaka is useful for players who like this type of weapon and want to be as strong as possible in physical battle because it gives them specialized paired sword training and strength skill points.
